Good call on a time for a change up from Keith.
I really appreciate all his heartfelt slow works. I just
agree it is time to change the pace. Hearing a fast, gritty, Keith tune about now would be like a breath of fresh air.

Soldatti I can't believe that people on this forum want the retire for the Stones. For god sake!

"Bridges To Babylon" shipped 5 million copies worldwide, "Voodoo Lounge" almost 8 millions and "Steel Wheels" 9 millions.
Their last three albums have shipped almost 22 millions copies worldwide!!!

"Beggars Banquet" sold 3 millions worldwide, "Let It Bleed" 4 millions, "Sticky Fingers" 5 millions and "Exile" 3 millions.
So with their 4 biggers albums ever sold 15 millions worldwide VS 22 millions from the last three!!

Comercially their are still a hit, only think on countries as Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Japan, Argentina, Canada, and many others on where the Stones are gods.

They NEVER NEVER NEVER will put an album as "Sticky Fingers" or "Let It Bleed" for god!. I go sick when people said: "I put "Bridges..." but didn't catch me, after that I put Exile".
1 - 1997 is not 1972.
2 - Ron Wood is not Mick Taylor
3 - Bill Wyman is not anymore
4 - Stu is not anymore
5 - Jimmy Miller is not anymore
6 - Nicky Hopkins is not anymore
And by last:
THEY ARE 60 YEARS OLD, NOT 30 CHRIST!!

I'm waiting a new album as the water: their last album came when I was 14 years old!.
I want a new album NOW and after that ANOTHER with the style that they want, but NOW!!!

Saint Sway I think the problem is Jagger

did anyone else notice on disc one of the Four Flicks dvd that "Dont Stop" had a nice retro sound in the studio. And then Jagger started to whine that it was "too country sounding" and needed to sound more sleek and sexy.

thats the problem with recent Stones albums in a nutshell. Jagger is defiantly against anything rootsy sounding. He hated Voodoo because he felt that it sounded too dated.Fuck that! Voodoo is a damn good record.

I say, if an when, they get back in the studio that Keith whips out his butterfly switchblade and places the cold steel of the blade right against Jaggers throat the next time he starts trying to get the Stones to sound "contemporary". Time for Keith to stear the ship. I'm sick of the compromise that has clouded their recordings of late. Jagger is too concerned with competing on the pop charts. Fuck him. Let him do that with his solo records. The Stones are the Stones. If your lucky enough to get them in the studio you should just let them be themselves and play their rootsy sounding dirty rock and roll asses off. Its what they do. Let em do it. Time for Jagger to get out of the way and LET THE STONES SOUND LIKE THE STONES

only Keef can stand up to him. I pray he does it.

Bloozehound Saint Sway, bravo, great observations and totally true. Nice analysis of the boys decent into a contemporary commercial-pop. I too thought VL was the best of the bunch, and think alot of the problem is jagger, and richards to certain degree.
BTW Nice to read something besides the usual rantings of obsessively-blind fanboy "STONES CAN DO NO WRONG!!" claptrap. (Did someone actually say "he should die for not wanting new Stone" album? Glad I dont live in the 3rd world, hubba hubba)
Most of you admitted, u think the new stuff is ok, but it's not great(yea yea better than the rest of the junk out there).
So in essence you are feeling there is a bit to be desired too, no?
I love the Stone's, i'm a huge fan, but their last few albums I could care less for. And I see no problem with a discussion of why this is. It's better than just stating "Stones new albums are crap" with no explanation given.
I mean saying "quit dreaming there'll never, ever be another Exile or Sticky fingers"
No shit?!??!
We know they don't make music like that anymore, but what i think we're saying is maybe, just maybe there could be another Some Girls, Tatoo You or even a VL-style album.
Back to the basics, rock n roll, plain ol' dirty, garage music.
Quit hangin' uptown and start visiting the other side of the tracks again. That's the Rolling Stones we know and love.
In a nutshell, i guess we're hoping they try a new approach on their next album, if there is one.
So don't get your panties in a wad fanboys, we're fans too.

Can I add something to your appreciated statements?
Jagger never actually "hated" Voodoo. He simply stated
Don Was was trying to remake Exile which he was not 100%
into. He did state that Voddoo Lounge was a very much "Time and Place Album" and he stated The Stones put alot of work into it. He also stated everyone sat down in the kitchen in the mansion in Ireland where they recorded it and discussed what type of album they wanted and how it should sound before they started on the project. So basically Jagger didn't necessarily want it as retro as it was in some parts but he also stated there was alot of good in Voodoo as we'll. He didn't hate the album.
As for Don't Stop, It was slower and Country like originally. At that point Jagger wanted it more sleazy and sleek. There is nothing wrong with that. Actually Don't Stop turned out neither Country or Sleazy. It went into a Poppy, Fun time, feel good, song and that is how it stayed.
I don't feel Don't Stop would of been as good in a slower mode.
Jagger keeps a little flair and trend to the Stones works these days. Richards keeps the tunes grounded in the Stones Roots and doesn't let it all go to production. The two meet in the middle. Nothing wrong with that. What do ya think?
Thanks for your input,
Ian

Wanting The Stones to retire is bullshit and I find it hard to believe that anyone that comes on this board and post such crap, is no more then a casual fan without a clue as to what a rock band does. They fucking play music, record and tour and one of these days we will wake to the news that The Stones are no more. I for one dreed the day that happens, so I will take anything that I can get from these guys while they're still here to make our lives a little better. Don't rush what will happen one of these days, enjoy them while they're still here to rock'n roll for us!

Here we go again. *SIGH* People who define what 'a real fan' should think and do. Let me put this straight: every person who says he/she 's a fan, is a fan. Everyone is a fan in their own way. There are common factors between fans: respect for their music, enjoying particular songs, etc. There's no formula for being a fan, like 'you have to have these standards (followed by a pre-defined list of characteristics and amount of hard-to-find bootlegs) and a partial and subjective jury will decide if you've earned the right to be a fan'.

If anyone wants to be critical, let them. If you don't agree, just say you don't agree and explain what's your particular point of view, without attacking people who happen to have another feeling about the subject matter.
I'm glad for every fan who can still enjoy a boot from 2003 as much as a boot from 1972, in the same way, good for you! I mean that. I just can't, cause I'm a different person and I define my own thoughts, perceptions and opinions.

I'm calling myself a Stones fan, and I am a fan of the Stones as a musical group, looking at the big picture, the influence they have had on modern music and perhaps even on fashion or whatever. But mainly because of the influence they have had and still have on me personally, it's an emotional thing rather than a rational thing. I have a personal taste in their songs and albums and looks through the years, as we all have (most fans hate Dirty Work, while I like it, as it was my first album). I'm not particularly fond of their stuff of the last 10 years, especially not what they've done live. So logically I personally am not particularly looking forward to any new Stones album or new tour (1 + 1 = 2). I have the right to say that. It doesn't change the whole big Stones-picture with 40 years of ingredients for me personally. Because that's how being a fan works for me. Might work differently for others.

I can see that difference between people. I like diversity. When will you?
*RESPECT* !

Edit: Riff-Hard-fan wrote: >My God if you don't like the Four Flicks or anything else they do don't bother to listen to it.. Nobody is forcing you to buy any of it.

What the fuck is that for an argument. So, if I understand correctly, if I bought a certain cd or dvd and was disappointed, I am not allowed to express that, I am supposed to either keep my mouth shut or lie. Only people who liked the cd/dvd have the right to express that.
How am I supposed to know if I like the cd/dvd without buying it and watching it I wonder?

OMG, unbelievable. You clearly come to a Stones forum just to hear your own thoughts reflected. You get an identity crisis when you read a different thought? Well then, why don't you just tape your own opinion and listen to it all night. Will really make sure you'll grow and mature as a human being.
I, on the other hand, come here because I like it when people are enthusiastic about something I'm not fond of. It makes me smile to read that, enjoying the fact that all people are different. I won't bash you over the head for liking something I don't like.
If I don't like something you do like, then there are probably also things I like and you don't right? Jeez...

Way to keep these jokers in line Angiegirl. crack that whip.

The Stones will put out another album. That's what they do. I vote for a babylon/voodoo mix. Voodoo had a strong overall feel to it, its own vibe. but i like how babylon was produced. it SOUNDS fantastic. merge a voodooesque feel with some babylonian production, and they really could make a great album. all it takes is about 9 or 10 good songs, without the aggressive "contemporary" effort. as much as i like babylon "might as well get juiced" makes me ill.
02-25-04 02:30 PM
Angiegirl See? That's what I mean. I like Might As Well Get Juiced .

Soldatti Great post Angiegirl!

I love "Dirty Work" too and with "Undercover" is one of my fauvorites albums. I can't remember when was the last time that I listened "Let It Bleed", 3, 4 months maybe more.
But I can remember how many times I listened "Dirty Work" on this 3, 4 months: 20 times maybe, Undercover also 20 times, Tattoo You 15 times, Voodoo Lounge 15 times too, Steel Wheels 10 times... but I listened "Exile..." and "Sticky..." 2 times maybe on this last months. I love their post 1978 stuff and their old stuff too but I can't listen "Let It Bleed" two times row...

I saw "Four Flicks" as 5-6 times and I can't wait for the new album!

eh, i dunno, babe. its the one point in that album where i get bored. "always suffering" doesn't do it for me either. i'm of the opinion that Mick's lyrics have suffered in recent years. "suffering" is one of several tunes i think would have really benefited from better lyrics.

besides those two tunes (juiced, suffering), babylon thrills me. it brings back great memories of my last year in college, and many a stones show with my girlfriend. just a good album. another one like that would be just F I N E with me.

but then, on a dark night, when i'm well buzzed and feeling a little sordid, voodoo gets me off in a big way. it's an oddly emotional album, with such a unique feel to it. they rock out early, then slide into a lower gear. in that respect, it really is a bit like exile.

of the last three, steel wheels is the one i just can't get a hold of. and not without some serious effort. maybe i'll try again tonight.

What do you mean??? :

The keys to your love
I've got the keys to your love

No matter where I go baby, no matter what I do
I spend my whole life honey, just thinking of you
Yeah it don't seem to matter, who's right and who's wrong
I want to tell you how I feel now, in the words of this song
Want to baby put a spell on you
There ain't nothing that you're going to do
I've got the keys to your love
I've got the secret of your heart
No matter where you I go baby honey
We're not too far apart

Now try to lock me out, I can always get in
I've got every permutation, every code and every pin
I'm so crazy about you, yeah that's the word on the street
Yeah I bet you heard all about it from the people you meet

You know baby, I put a spell on you
Can't take it off now, there ain't nothing you can do
I've got the keys to your love
I play the keys of your heart
It sounds so sweet baby
Won't stop once I start
I've got the keys to your love
I've got the secret of your heart
No matter where I go baby
We're not too far apart

Your all that I got
Without you, baby, my life's kind of shot
I look for your face
Cause no one else could fill this space

Watch out baby, I put a spell on you
You can't resist it, I just hoodoo you

I've got the key to your love
I've got the secret of your heart
No matter where I go baby
No matter where I go sugar

Na, na, na, na
I got the keys to you love babe (keys to your love)

OMIGSH! that is one of the first songs i would use to make my case. thank you, darling, for presenting prosecution exhibit "A" for me.

i hate to say this, but those lyrics hurt. ouch. i love mick as much as the next guy, i promise. the guy is a miracle, but i could have written that song.

i must admit, every now and then, he still does it right. the Too Tight lyrics are classic - and not solely for the "sheep" element, mind you.

angiegirl, i respectfully disagree with you on "keys to you ugh." but you're still beautiful.

Bloozehound Great post Angiegirl.
There's nothing wrong with civil discussion about the Stone's state of being. I like reading discussion, both pro and con, I tend to learn a little with each post.
In the past I've found that due to certain recommendations I've actually warmed up to a particular songs/album I wasn't fond of before.
This has absolutely nothing to do with being a "real fan" or not. Constructive critisism is helpful.
These knee-jerk reactionist saying we should die for not wanting new Stone's album, questioning what business we have posting negative comments here, and how dare you dis the Stones blah blah blah...is a bunch of claptrap.
Maybe they should take some of their own advice and if you don't like what someone posts, or don't have anything constuctive to add then DON'T READ IT & DON'T RESPOND TO IT. No one's forcing you to.
Besides, I usually get the impression some of these kneejerkers aren't "fans", more like idol worshippers, so don't drink the kool-aid.

While I agree with the basics of you post, it's a shame you had to put in that last sentence I've quoted, as that's exactly the same behaviour I was talking about in my previous long post, about people thinking they have the right to define the concept of 'fans' for others...
