BRIAN JONES MUST BE REMEMBERED

10:30 - 02 November 2004

Fans of former Rolling Stone Brian Jones want to put up a bronze bust in memory of the rock legend.

The Brian Jones Fan Club want a permanent reminder of the former Cheltenham Grammar School pupil who died in 1969. The £15,000 head and shoulders bust is planned for July 2006, the tenth anniversary of the Cheltenham-based fan club.

Rolling Stone Bill Wyman has already agreed to unveil the bust which will be homed at Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum, Regent Arcade or the new brewery site.

David Reynolds, of the fan club, said: "We've been thinking of getting a bust of Brian for years. It seems a more realistic option than a statue. We've raised £7,000 in seven years and we need more to afford the bust."

Club members have until February 28 to choose one of three busts, designed by Dutch artist John Klinkenberg.

Mr Reynolds added: "At the moment money's coming in slowly but now we've got an idea, it's something to aim for. Donations have come in from all over the world in the past.

"We had a £900 cheque from an association of midgets in Hollywood three years ago. It came with a note saying that they admired what we were doing for Brian.

"A Japanese woman gave me £200 earlier this year after I showed her around Cheltenham."

The fan club also sells ceramic swimming pool tiles from the pool at Cotchford Farm in East Sussex, where Brian was found dead in 1969.

In three years 200 of the blue tiles from the pool have been sold for a £20 donation each.

Mr Reynolds said: "We're talking with Pangolin Editions from Chalford regarding the design and cost of the bust. I'll be approaching local businesses and contacts to get some support for the bust."

In 1997 the club mooted plans to put up a £25,000 lifesized statue of Brian in Cheltenham's Promenade.

Then mayor of Cheltenham Les Godwin said Brian was not important enough.

Brian was born in Hatherley and went to Pate's Grammar School. He founded the Rolling Stones in 1962 and was found dead in the pool at his East Sussex mansion in 1969, a month after leaving the band.

A film The Wild and Wycked World of Brian Jones will document the final three months of his life. It explores the theory he was murdered by a builder over a debt. British actor Leo Gregory will star as the guitarist and the film is currently being shot at Shepperton Studios in Middlesex.

I never realized Brian had such an impact on little people? Wasn't he quite rude to them during the filming of "Rock & Roll Circus?"
