OMG! WHY GOD WHY!
January 31st, 2006 03:20 PM
mrhipfl Why exactly is that bad? special guests could be good, like Stevie Wonder.
January 31st, 2006 03:38 PM
Saint Sway even our most despised enemies - Macca & U2 had the dignity and balls to perform on their own w/out "special" guests.

Aerosmith bought into the networks idea of bringing out guests and it turned into an enormous embarrassment. The network talked them into a parade of ass clowns like N Sync and Britney rapping w/Aerosmith.

The Stones can be talked into anything. Thus, I fear the worst.

CraigP I sure as hell hope there will not be any 'guests' or any Motown shite during their set, esp. Stevie Wonder.

Would you rather have them sing ATPTB with stevie or miss you with justin timberlake?????

I dont think its a bad idea at all
January 31st, 2006 04:02 PM
gimmekeef Can this get any worse?....I can see it now...A gigantic forklift rolls toward the stage...Carrying Aretha and Stevie.......omg!!!!!!!!!
January 31st, 2006 05:31 PM
doo doo doo Dude Only if the guests are Mick Taylor and Billy Preston.
January 31st, 2006 06:15 PM
taz22 So....will it be Satisfaction....with Mustang Sally tossed in ( special guest Buddy Guy ), since the past few shows they have played some Mustang Sally during Satisfaction???
January 31st, 2006 06:23 PM
glencar This sounds like a bad idea? Some people have no respect for black folks.
January 31st, 2006 06:42 PM
stonedinaustralia to craig P and gimmekeef:

1. Aretha is not Motown

2. Motown is not shite (in my, and a lot of others', opinion)

January 31st, 2006 06:43 PM
Nellcote Nothing at all wrong with this.

Just the Stones paying homage to the greats who got them there.

Who else did they do this with?

Go see Shindig with Howlin Wolf for starters.

They had balls bringing 86 yr old Furry Lewis out on tour with them.

John Lee Hooker in AC City.

Just the Stones being the Stones, that's all.

Enjoy!

January 31st, 2006 06:46 PM
stonedinaustralia agreed Nellcote - my thoughts as well
January 31st, 2006 06:53 PM
the good I swear, some of you people have a corn cobb up your ass. What is wrong with the Stones doing some motown in Detriot? A GREAT idea.

maumau i am speechless
to read that the rumour they will play ain't to produ to beg is "welcomed" this way by stones fans
it is incredible
note that aaron neville, dr john aretha franklin and stevie wonder are in the house
and i think they all deserve some respect from a stones fan
at least i do
problem with color of skin on this board?

moreover it sure is not a "warhorse"
and same people here will moan for sure if the rumor was SMU

last but not least i've heard good versions of the song from this tour

i really hope this rumor turns out to be solid

it is the superbowl and not a club gig so i find cool to put on a song not many will recognize as a stones song and still give the "families" what they expect, that is a bunch of legends on stage

motown is legend
January 31st, 2006 07:00 PM
maumau huh, i did not notice who posted this rumour in the first place
i guess a bunch of White nerds miming the stones deserve more respect than the above mentioned niggers

January 31st, 2006 07:10 PM
Soldatti I expect guests since the announcement, so not a real surprise.
January 31st, 2006 07:16 PM
Saint Sway think of it this way...

They are going to play 3 or 4 songs.

if they go with the network's motown guest spot suggestion. That leaves 2 or 3 more songs...

pencil in RFD as a gimme.

now you have Aint Too Proud To Beg, RFD and 1 or 2 other Stones songs.

lets say its SMU & IORR.... would you say that after that performance people will think of the Stones as The Worlds Greatest R&R band? Or as a has been oldies act?

but...
What if they instead came out w/guns blazing with a high energy Jumpin Jack Flash. And followed it by reminding the world they still rock with a raunchy Rough Justice. And then slammed their set closed with the 1-2 punch of a sizzling Gimme Shelter and crowd pleasing Brown Sugar.

the Stones only have a small window to make an impression on a huge national audience. Clogging up the small set by playing a Motown cover and Run For Drinks isnt gonna get the job done. Especially if they parade out a bunch of other acts and have to share the spot light with them.

Riffhard So the Stones paying tribute to Motown while they are in Motown is a bad idea? You guys are fucking clueless!! It's a fucking GREAT idea, and I felt that it was a given that they would do something of this nature the second that they booked the appearance.

The Stones are going to tip the hat to a genre that they have borrowed from extensivly throughout their carreer with great success, and some here bitch about it?!? I cannot for the life of me see any logic to the bitching.

The black community could fucking use Motown these days instead of all the gansta rap shit that they are polluting the airwaves with. Motown rocks. I'll take Marvin Gaye anyday over that overrated hack 50 Cent!!

Get a clue guys.

Saint Sway,

There is a lot about the Rolling Stones you don't understand if you think them playing some motown (especially in Detroit) would be a bad idea. The Stones sound and appeal extends well beyond songs like JJF, RJ, GS, & BS. I don't think you really "get" what the Stones are about. You are at the beginning of your understanding, my friend. The road stretches out far, far ahead of you.

though i don't share your view on "all" rap, i must say that i really thought that the stones paying tribute to some of their black fathers, mother brothers and sisters would rise these same feelings of yours in every single stones fan

instead a lot of bitching

bah!

You're right on all counts, Sway. They need to rock hard and cut the crap ("Let's cut out the crap...let's go" like Keith said before Can't Be Seen). In a two hour concert, there's plenty of room for filler and wussy songs. With a 20 minute set, it has to kick ass start to finish.

No Lethargy. Saint Sway is wrong on all counts. Here's why. The Stones have made a 44 year carreer of paying homage to their greatest influences by covering them. Many of those influences come directly from Motown. Now the Stones are about to play to the largest TV audience in the world, and they may choose to return the favor,so to speak. Who the hell are we to second guess their motives?! They are paying rightful tribute to bands that helped shape their own carreer, and it's right and just to do so. To do so in Detroit is perfectly appropriate.

To bitch and moan about that is absurd on every level. It also shows no respect for the genre that that the Stones themseleves clearly loved. I find it hard to say your a Stones fan,and then turn around and raise hell about them doffing the cap to Motown. I mean fuck guys this is where much of it all started!!

The Stones may well pull off a brilliant Motown tribute with former Motown stars and then bring the house down with some of their old war horses. That would be great as far as I'm concerned.

Think about it for fuck's sake! Stones and Motown? Perfect fit everytime!

Gazza The prospect of the Stones tipping their hat to the great musical heritage of the city they're playing in is one of the few redeeming ideas I've heard about this show.

Great idea if it comes off and anyone who can't grasp the debt that the Stones owe that type of music has no concept of the band to begin with and obviously thinks that the music they've given us over the last four decades just came to them from nowhere

Must say that when they pulled "Aint Too Proud To Beg" out of the hat at MSG two weeks ago, my immediate thought was that it's surprise inclusion may be as a prelude to playing it at the Superbowl.

And being joined onstage by the likes of Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder or someone of that ilk is a damn sight more appealing than the 'pandering to the kids' bullshit of playing with such musical nobodies as Timberlake, Eminem et al.
February 1st, 2006 12:08 AM
erikjjf This would be a very nice gesture of the band.
February 1st, 2006 01:01 AM
Brainbell Jangler True Stones fans from both ends of the political spectrum join in lauding this potential tribute to one of the wellsprings of the Stones' rich musical legacy and in despising the shallow crassness of those whose critical faculties are limited to distinguishing between two musical genres: "rawk" and "wussy."

maumau riffhard, the good and gazza made clear what, IMHO, should be given for any stones fan

this last comparison between the tribute of mick singing verses of mustang sally during satisfaction and the mixing of angie with sth, tells a lot about how narrow can be a "stones fan" insight in the music of his/her beloved band

to me it is simply unbelievable

what is satisfaction if not a perfect rewriting of a soul tune where horns are originally replaced with a riffing guitar?

get a clue

anyway ---> ATPTB rocks!
