RIP Ernie!
LUMBERTON, Texas (AP) - Ernie Holmes, one of the anchors of Pittsburgh's "Steel Curtain" defense in the 1970s, has died in a car crash. He was 59.
A dispatcher with the Texas Department of Public Safety said Holmes was driving alone Thursday night when his car left the roadway and rolled over several times near Lumberton, about 16 miles north of Beaumont in Southeast Texas.
The department said Friday that Holmes was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the DPS said. Holmes lived in Wiergate, Texas.
The two-time All Pro played on two Super Bowl winning teams while with the Steelers from 1972-77. He spent the 1978 season with New England.

Very sad. He was the meanest SOB on that defensive line.

The man was like a god to me - the original exalted man. He shaved his fro in the shape of an arrow, to remind him which way to go. Sometimes he would get drunk on road trips to Ohio and shoot at police helicopters. He lived life to the fullest, and The Nation loved him.
Fats!

I can hear sportscaster Myron Cope yelling out his name with a DOUBLE YOI! Myron really liked Ernie "Fats" Holmes. What a tough player and a wild man. Ernie Holmes, Steve Courson, Mike Webster -- all taken before their rightful time. This is getting too much to take!
Also, Myron is back in the hospital. Get well soon, Myron.
How 'bout Ernie in Wrestlemania II ?

That landscape in the background looks familiar to me. Those are the fields around Saint Vincent College (Latrobe, PA) -- my alma mater, also long-time Steeler training camp for the summer.

'tis Latrobe, many a Topps photo shoot out there.
And it came to pass that Ernest Fats Holmes shared his divinity with us before he came to pass: "I'll be glad to leave here. I feel like eating palm trees. I don't like this place. It's for people with arthritis. They come here to play golf and to die." (Miami comments pre-Supe IX). |
