Good to see the greatest living Irishman get a nomination for best actor.
Hopefully he'll get lucky at last - I think he's been nominated about 7 times. |

I think O'Toole has a good shot at it this time. The only possible competition was Jack for The Departed & he wasn't nominated. Possibly Forest Whitaker... |

I didn't know Forrest Whittaker was Irish?!? LOL
Ryan Gosling is from my hometown. He grew up a couple of streets over from where I live. |

Well... yeah. Light but fun entertainment without any risk, dare, stand, conviction or meaning. It IS the Academy!! Funny how so many people still seem to hold 'Oscar material' in great awe. I thought the term would refer to dresses and designers by now .
Seriously though, I liked that film. It's great to see an 'independent' (whatever that may mean these days) film from Sundance make it 'all the way' to the Globes and the Oscars, even though it's quite formulaic, especially the ending. The acting was very good though. But I thought Babel and The Queen (talking about the acting, not the angle of the story) were far better.
Helen Mirren is one of my favourite actresses, along with Kate Winslet, and it so happens that both their performances in their movies were oustanding imo, and they're both nominated. Tough call. BTW, I've never heard of Ryan Gosling or his movie, is he any good?
The Oscars show isn't even broadcasted here on regular tv, only one PPV channel, ever since the BBC dropped out. Then again, it's the middle of the night when the statues trade hands.
Bummer the Dutch entry didn't get nominated. Again. Third year in a row I believe. Paul Verhoeven's Zwartboek is a very good movie and it has been years and years since a Dutch movie pulled in so many viewers. Too bad. |

Yeah, I know, I still hold out hope. I haven't seen many of the films that were listed... errr, actually I only saw LMS so I guess it's not fair to judge it among the rest nominated. I did like the meaning it tried to get across and it did have its moments. Toni Collette is one of the many underrated actresses, imo. Ryan Gosling was in 'Notebook' with Rachel McAdams and a few other flicks not worth mentioning (or remembering). |

Ryan Gosling was in Murder By Numbers with Sandra Bullock. He was also in that movie wherein he played a Nazi sympathizer in the present day. I haven't seen whatever he's been nominated for but I think it's the one wherein he plays a meth addict-cum-teacher. |

The only one of the movies in the top 6 categories that I've seen is The Departed & I just bought the United 93 DVD since some of my co-workers are in it. And I liked Greengrass's other work. |

Astonishingly compelling! Riveting! Unforgettable!
Seriously, it was my favorite movie last year - although "favorite" probably isn't the right word, given the subject matter. |
