To me Zeppelin had a more consistent output than the Who - every release from the first album up to and including Presence is great.
But the quality of songwriting & intensity of performance of Townsend & Co in their prime (approx 1970-71) has never been matched by any band before or since - save the Stones.
They would have been well advised to pack it in when Moon died, though..

OK. Zep was more "solid" in the seventies...no doubt. Zep had all kinds of strong points, but at the end of the day, and when it is all said and done I will give the prize to The Who.
For innovation, The Who nailed them, and would place only second to the Stones, for musicianship it was somewhat close, yet I give it to the Who.
for personal preference I gotta say The Who.
I said it before and I'll say it again, Led Zep IS in a sense "overrated". Always has been. Sure a great band, but that is far as it goes in my book. Nothing more. Just really a good group who stuck around throughout the seventies.
They are not up to scale like The Stones, The Who, or even (shall I say it.... ) The Beatles when it is all said and done.

LZ. like any band, is way overrated by their fans.
The Who are way overrated by the "rock journalists"
Pete's compositions are innovative, idiosyncratic and original.
But that doesn't mean that they are great.
His theme of teenage angst and joy is nearly endless.
It gets dated.
I loved The Who in High School and thought LZ were candy tunes for shallow folks.
Older, I have found much of The Who, lyrically, ridiculously overwrought and boringly self centered. Pete's desire is to be a novelist, not a rock musician.
LZ just wanted to entertain, dazzle and amaze like a great magician.
I prefer that nowadays than ego driven introspection.
Rock Operettas. What a larf!

What part of Quadrophenia sucks? Call it Opera, story or whatever. It kicks ass, and unlike Tommy isn't some wishy washy hippie tale. It's pain, drugs and misery mixed with a bit of history.
No band has ever matched an album to rival it. It's no Exile, don't get me wrong, but it is a great Who album, and my fav. Who album.

It's my favorite too. I agree, its not on par with Exile/Let it Bleed/Sticky Fingers....but it is very good and extremely creative.

Now THAT'S postin'!
Here's the thing with Quadrphenia. If you have ever, in your life, been an adolescent male (which I would assume is every guy here), then this album makes all the sense in the world. This is the story of our teen years. Obviously we didn't all have to deal with mod/rocker wars or Vespas or whatever... but the pain of growing up, of trying to fit in, the pain of loving someone who doesn't love you back... the pain of being an outsider... that's something that speaks across generations. That's something we've all felt, men and women alike. To this day, songs like The Real Me ("The girl I used to love lives in this yellow house/Yesterday she passed me by/She doesn't want to know me now"), Cut My Hair ("Why do I have to move with a crowd/Of kids who hardly notice I'm around?/I work myself to death just to fit in"), I'm One ("Fingers so clumsy, voice too loud"), and Sea and Sand ("They finally threw me out, my mama got drunk on stout/My dad couldn't stand on two feet, as he lectured about morality") can bring a tear to the eye.
Quadrophenia, their best album? Maybe not (although it certainly is in the upper echelon), but I swear up and down that's it's the best piece of music about being a teenager that's ever been conceived.

As far as Daltrey-as a singer is concerned....Anybody who can sing "Sally take my hand" (the beginning of the final verse in 'Baba O'Riley') and make it sound like the coolest line ever uttered, is the best singer, (excluding Mick, of course-who is undoubtedly the greatest ever, and not just because he was'nt a screeching white boy like Bob Plant.)

YES !!!!!
" Out here in the fields
I fight for my meals
I get my back into my living
I don't need to fight
To prove I'm right
I don't need to be forgiven
Don't cry
Don't raise your eye
It's only teenage wasteland
Sally ,take my hand
Travel south crossland
Put out the fire
Don't look past my shoulder
The exodus is here
The happy ones are near
Let's get together
Before we get much older
Teenage wasteland
It's only teenage wasteland
Teenage wasteland
Oh, oh
Teenage wasteland
They're all wasted! "

That was great Moonie!!! Thanks. I've never heard that before. Is that on CD anywhere? Pete should put that out. I didn't say Pete was a bad guitarist. Yes, he's a great guitarist in his own right. But I still think Page is better. Pete is mostly a rhythm guitarist rather than a lead.

Ian, I think you wrote here exactly what I've felt for years. Next to the Stones, Beatles, or Who, Zep is a notch below. Their song writing is dubious. Some songs are poorly arranged. And no matter what some say, Plant's singing is mediocre. The only thing that puts them in as a great band is Page's guitar playing.

Ok, this is just brilliant. There are only a few artists
who I can say that I like everything they've ever done
Pete Townshend is one. Steven Stills is another. Tom Petty
is in there. And the Stones from '63-'71. I like some later
Stones things too, but not everything. I think Townshend
is brilliant. An almost-genius for sure.

I love Led Zep, but I love The Who more, in fact at a boxing day sale I got the Who's Amazing Journey, I only watched the 1st disc so far, loved it, about the history of the Who, I also got a 2 disc DVD Led Zep. set, which I haven't watched yet, but it's all the concerts from 1970 at Royal albert hall, up to 1979 at Knebworth.
As far as this thing about about not being a Stones fan if you like some other band, is ridiculous, like Johnny Rotten once said "Have It All, why be so cheesy?" there's nothing wrong with liking even loving other bands.

I had the vinyl once, so I assume it made it to CD - Secret Policeman's Other Ball - it had 3 Pete tunes: Drowned, Won't Get Fooled Again, and Pinball Wizard - all acoustic, incredible stuff.
There was a record of another Secret Policeman's show featuring Sting doing acoustic Message in a Bottle - it was in Sting's pre-wanker days, and was also incredible.
