Rocker Rod tipped as Sir
VETERAN rocker Rod Stewart was yesterday tipped by bookmakers to be knighted next year.
They said that it could soon be Tonight’s the Knight for the Queen to dub the croaky-voiced singer Sir Rod.
Bookies William Hill offered odds of 7-1 after being bombarded with requests for bets.
Spokesman Graham Sharpe said: “There are lots of people who think it’s about time Rod was knighted, including himself.
“There was a leak over the weekend about the Government wanting to liven up the honour’s list. Creating a Sir Rod would certainly do that.
“We have taken a considerable number of £10 and £20 wagers already and if the flow of bets continues like this we will have to cut the odds.”
Rod, 58, would join fellow rockers Sir Mick Jagger, 60, Sir Elton John, 56, and Sir Paul McCartney, 61, to make up a quartet of pop knights. During his long career, Rod has chalked up six solo No1s and a further 20 Top Ten hits.
Rod, who is dating model Penny Lancaster, 32, moaned about never receiving any gongs two months ago. He said: “I don’t know why I haven’t got any honour.”
But then joked: “Maybe it will come along — the OBE: Ordered Out Of The British Empire.” |

ROD STEWART NEXT FOR KNIGHTHOOD?
ROD STEWART will be the latest star in line for a knighthood, if the British public have their way
The ageing rocker has been the subject of a flurry of betting at WILLIAMS HILL's bookmakers, and he's been given 7-1 odds of becoming Sir Rod next year (04).
William Hill spokesman GRAHAM SHARPE says, "There are lots of people who think it's about time Rod was knighted, including himself.
"There was a leak over the weekend about the Government wanting to liven up the honours' list. Creating a Sir Rod would certainly do that."
Stewart, 58, has made no secret of his annoyance at not being given any honours by Britain's QUEEN ELIZABETH. If the public are right, he will join SIR MICK JAGGER, SIR ELTON JOHN and SIR PAUL McCARTNEY in the league of real rock royalty.

Thank God there aren't many rock legends who get this kind of honouring bull in the U.S.-what is the sort of honour (here in Canada, it's the Order of Canada and we've given it to some deserving people in music namely Gordon Lightfoot although I fear losers like Rush might get it if not already-Randy Bachman, Neil young, Joni Mitchell all deserve it too but prolly the latter two would decline). Anyway, there's no music stars getting the Congressional Medal of Honour, are there?
Imagine:
Saturday, the United States will be bestowing honours on the Ft. Worth infantry that captured Saddam, as well as Little Richard and the surviving member of the Temptations! Uh, whaa? I know a few guys who would deserve this: Elvis posthumously, Bob Dylan and B.B. King come to mind.
Geez, to me I think the U.S., if they ever did so, would take a lot more consideration of who to honour. Think of rock legends that would be a disgrace to that award: Jerry Lee (married his cousin), Chuck Berry (a friggin sleazy lecherous old man), sure Elvis was a pill-popper but served his country militarily and as an international phenom.
Meanwhile the UK doesn't care about people's history because being British rock royalty seems a more distinguished, respectable stature. Look at relatively unscathed as people stars like Mick, Sting, Rod, Elton Macca. But the royal braintrust forgets about a few like Elton being a former cokehead/alcoholic, McCartney being a blatant user of drugs in the late 60s (member the LSD/pot controversy). Now what? Clapton the former heroin/alcohol addict, Pete Townshend the former druggie/child porn controversy guy? I don't think it's wrong to knight guys with shady pasts, I'm just saying you could do anything outside of be anti-Empire (like Lennon and Keef!) or a convicted murderer as long as your music is famous. |
