Provided you have an OK amplifier with a phono channel, you should be able to get into some pretty nice vinyl sound for a couple hundred bucks. Check out audio repair shops and used dealers, as vintage turntables are sweet. I agree that the fewer electronic bells and whistles, the better. You can, of course, go batshit and get something like this:

I have made my primary living selling vinyl records for 15 years now, so I don't know what these people could possibly be talking about.

Interesting read. I still play my vinyl records but mostly because I've got a Sony PS-F5 and it looks great on the wall. Reminds me of WLIR. What a great radio station that was!
