Stupid question on a site like this!
The Beatles were a great band but their span as a recording band was only seven years - a sixth of that of the Stones. The Stones recorded more great albums and great songs and were a far better live act.
Had the Beatles kept going for another 20 or 30 years, they wouldnt be viewed the same way as they are now, because they fit very nicely into that little 60's time capsule and quit as a band before they got too old and way past their creative best.
You could make a valid argument that at the time they were BOTH active, the Beatles may have been a better act over that 1963-70 period, although personally I thought that by 1968-69 the Stones were at least their equal. Add on the next two Stones albums released after that - Sticky Fingers and Exile - and by then you have the undisputed greatest band of all time in my opinion.
