Topic: Truce is Off - The One Thing I Still Like About the Crowes Return to archive Page: 1 2
September 22nd, 2005 10:44 PM
winter I can't sit back quietly while Saint Sway constantly shit-bags the Stones, so I am back on the offensive.

Here is the one thing that I still find redeeming about the Crowes:

It is the way that Chris Robinson still looks at his brother when they are on stage, it's sort of like a red headed step child looking for approval from his abusive step parent.

We'll, that's not exactly it, the thing I still like about the Crowes is actually the next moment when Rich looks back at him as though he is going to launch a fist into that skinny c%@k S*cker's chest and fold him in half -

MAN, that would be cool.

I would sit through a dozen of their lame ass shows for the opportunity to witness that -SPLAT, uhh

Ribs anyone?

A special live black crowes moment brought to you exclusively by instant live,

Wintah

exile glad to see you back on the offensive Wintah.

Fuck the crowes.

Ill take a slaw.

Nellcote Let's not forget the mastery of Marc Ford there Wintah, as my sources tell me he's in line to replace Jeff Beck in his own band!
September 23rd, 2005 12:10 PM
Saint Sway a few of my favorite moments....

I like when Ronnie Wood jumps up and down and waves his arms at the audience instead of actually playing guitar.

I also love when Keith completely flubs the intro to Brown Sugar. A song that any guitarist, in any bar in any town can nail.

mock the Crowes with your silly jokes all you want. But give me a searing Ford solo anyday of the week over Ronnie pretending to be a guitarist. And Rich's heavy open-g riffs put Keith's arthritic fingers and stupid leg kicks to shame these days.
September 23rd, 2005 12:11 PM
Bloozehound In all fairness I shall be seeing the dasterdly Crowes tonight, in just about 8 hours, I'll be back with first hand review

think I should place some slaw in their tip jar, they mught be hungry

whaouww!!
my sources told me jcdesq will replace Ted Nugent in his own band too!!

the Crowes are a good band IMHO.
they take risks, the stones don't.
they got young inspired guitarists. the Stones haven t got.
that's all.

And Saint Sway is a fan, he will defend them till the end!
I may disagree with him, but he looks like a good guy.

Nellcote Au contraire Mr. Sway.
Just following towards your many posts of the prowess of this band.
It must be the "real deal" if you continue to bring forward such commentary.

However, "searing" is a term reserved for the proper grilling of animal or fish products.
Searing usually takes the raw product, when said product is applied to high heat on a grill, seals in the natural juices.
Usually after this process, the remainder of cooking involves several hours of smoke filled cooking, commonly referred to as "low & slow"
This cooking process, for the best of experiences, usually is for a good 8-10 hours.
Searing is also used for the rapid grilling of products, when no smoking is involved.
Blooze will attest to this, as he's well versed in the subject of fine bbq.

Rarely is "searing" used to describe any other event.
In summary Sway, please take time to use more descriptive terms in your comments than the use of words out of context.
We care about you, we really do.

BTW, Blooze, please set us all straight with an uncompromised review of the events at the Black Crowes show.
I will make certain to set aside time for your comments
this weekend, and hope others will do the same.
And, please ask for the slaw.

for the record,

I am an a-hole. Admittedly. But thanks for the kind words.

But the Stones are my favorite band. Bar none.

The Crowes are my 3rd favorite band. Faces are 2nd.

I became a Crowes fan because when they came on the scene they reminded me so much of all the things I loved about the Stones. They looked, sounded and behaved like the Stones. I was hooked.

now 15 years later, I still love the Stones. But where I once loved the Crowes for being like the Stones, I now I find myself wishing the Stones were more like The Crowes.

I just wish they were more committed to putting out quality, rootsy guitar rock. I wish they still lived it. I wish they jammed out their songs a little more. I wish they mixed things up and took chances onstage. I wish they they played less hits and more rarities and covers and stuff. I wish they still had that fuck you attitutude. I wish they didnt pilfer their fans bank accounts. I wish their show was more raw and rockin. Less Vegas. Ditch the background musicians. Ditch the silly glitzy clothes. Rock out.

I still love the Stones always will. But I'm gonna call them out for what I consider crimes to their reputation.

if they do something lame, I'll call them out for it here. And if someone feels they need to mock the Crowes, well, I'm gonna defend them.

In the end, the Stones are - and always will be - the Greatest Rock & Roll Band of All-Time.

The Black Crowes are, IMO, the last real Rock & Roll band around.

No, their not the Stones. Never will be. But they are the last band that is trying to carry the torch of what real R&R is and should be. They love the Stones and proudly wear their influence on their sleeve. Bands like that are a dying bread. We should celebrate them for it. Theres way too many Bon Jovi's, Maroon 5's and Limp Bizkits in the world for us to waste our time knockin the Crowes.

peace, love, grits and gravy,

Sway

I got their first album, but they got boring real quick.

quote:

I wish the STones were more like Iron Maiden (every song played perfectly, real heavy on new stuff regardless of what the fans want, an aggressive and offensive lead singer). But, surprise surprise, they are still the Rolling Stones, just a little older.

quote:

I just wish they were more committed to putting out quality, rootsy guitar rock. I wish they still lived it. I wish they jammed out their songs a little more. I wish they mixed things up and took chances onstage. I wish they they played less hits and more rarities and covers and stuff.

They have been a virtual corporation since 1989. Unlikely they are going back in time anytime soon.

quote:

I wish they still had that fuck you attitutude.

But they do. In this case, however, its fuck *YOU* and from the content of your recent posts, I think you are starting to understand.

quote:

I wish they didnt pilfer their fans bank accounts. I wish their show was more raw and rockin. Less Vegas. Ditch the background musicians. Ditch the silly glitzy clothes. Rock out.

Damn, and you bought all those tickets knowing this was the Stones you were going to get as with the last several tours?

quote:

I still love the Stones always will. But I'm gonna call them out for what I consider crimes to their reputation.

You project a reputation on them then get upset because they don't live up to it?

quote:

if they do something lame, I'll call them out for it here. And if someone feels they need to mock the Crowes, well, I'm gonna defend them.

Not much to mock really, just another run of the mill rock band indistinguishable from dozens of others I have heard.

quote:

In the end, the Stones are - and always will be - the Greatest Rock & Roll Band of All-Time.

All- Time: yes. 2005? Not necessarily. Once again, not really a surprise.

quote:

The Black Crowes are, IMO, the last real Rock & Roll band around.

Not sure what you mean by "real" but there are hundreds in the basements and garages around the world. Actually seems like a lot of great bands coming out of Scandanavia the last 5 years or so.

quote:

No, their not the Stones. Never will be. But they are the last band that is trying to carry the torch of what real R&R is and should be. They love the Stones and proudly wear their influence on their sleeve. Bands like that are a dying bread. We should celebrate them for it.

I saw them, there wasn't much to celebrate. They couldn't even top Oasis which any third rate garage band should be able to do.

quote:

Theres way too many Bon Jovi's, Maroon 5's and Limp Bizkits in the world for us to waste our time knockin the Crowes.

And there always has been. The names and faces change, but the attitude stays the same (Boston, Styx, Bay City Rollers, etc)

Saint Sway Gustabaloova

cool list. You can add Jumpin Jack Flash and Dead Flowers to it.

Also, they sneak in a Midnight Rambler jam pretty frequently during Thorn In My Pride.

Stop Breaking Down had been played by Marc Ford. And Rich likes to jam out Slave in sound checks. And theres a Stones cover that Chris has been doing with Phil Lesh's band. Cant think of it right now...

keep a watch out for Soul Surviver or Casino Boogie one of these days....

exile What a complete load of shit Saint Sway!

You have to be kidding for a start.
So you want to firstly compare the Stones (pioneers of Rock and Roll History) with some diet-lite version try-hards from Atlanta the Black Crowes. Who, by the way, don't even have the originality to come up with their own style of music.

As idiotic as that seems I will give you the benefit of the doubt and not treat you as a complete moron. (Although the jury is out on that one)

Firstly what made the stones truly great is that they actually had HITS. Many of them. Something that has eluded the Crowes since Remedy.

Secondly The Stones experimented with music from Psychedelic, Country Gospel, and Punk. Good or bad results are beside the point. The Crowes are still getting their try-hard Rolling Stones style right.

How long have the Crowes been around? Approx 15 years?

the stones actually had a impressive body of work by the time they had been around 15 years with a list of albums The Rolling Stones (England's Newest Hit makers), 12 x 5, he Rolling Stones No. 2, The Rolling Stones Now!, Out Of Our Heads, December's Children (And Everybody's), Aftermath, Between The Buttons, Flowers, Their Satanic Majesties Request, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Get Yer Ya Ya's Out, Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main St, Goat's Head Soup, It's Only Rock 'N Roll, Black And Blue, Some Girls.

I’m not going to list how many 'hits' or classic rock and Roll anthems are on that list of albums they made in their first 15 years. I don’t want to embarrass you or these Black Crowes you want to compare The Stones to.

What have the Black Crowes got to show after 15 years?
How many albums? How many Classic songs? How many Anthems that will go down in R&R history? Fuck all!

What have the Crowes done? Fuck I stopped buying Crowes albums after Three Snakes & One Charm, they are so shit. Lions wasn’t worth the Cd it was burnt on.

I mean even Jagger and Richards solo albums "sold", unlike Chris Robinson’s solo effort "New Earth Mud"

The Crowes were and always will be an average Rock and Roll band, that fell short of everyone’s expectations. Mine included.

You obviously have some sort of ‘chip on your shoulder’ or ‘small man’s” syndrome regarding the Black Crowes. Why else would you go to a Rolling Stones board and claim the BC’s are superior. Your arguments are soley based on your own personal opinion and NO facts.

Whatever it is, its charm-less.

Riffhard Thank you exile! I could not have put it better myself! Sway likes the Crowes. I'm happy for him,but his posting on this site has always been one-trick-pony bullshit.

The Crowes have never achieved the level of greatness that he would like to have everyone believe. I have seen the Crowes dozens of times. Hell,I used to see them at a club in Atlanta called The Edge in Little Five Points. Back then they were known as Mr. Crowes Garden. They covered all the trendy shit that was popular back in the day. College shit mostly. Then they dissapeared from the scene for awhile and came back as the newly dubbed Black Crowes. I loved that first album, and their second one as well. There can be no denying that Southern Harmony was a great disk, but it was just so retro and unoriginal. They have all but dissapeared on the music scene for everybody, but the diehards like Sway.

They have always been cut and paste Xerox copy band with more than a healthy dose of Faces' and Stones' sound in the mix. I like that shit, but as for originality? They have never brought that to the table. Never. As in nada, zip, zilch, bubkiss! No originality whatsoever. They also have absolutly nothing in the way of charisma. Not to mention Chris' insessant whiny assed voice. I can only listen to about ten minutes of the Crowes before I have to change the disk. His voice kills it for me everytime.

Other than all of that they are a decent rock and roll band with at least two, possibly three, decent albums to their credit.

winter Exile and Riffhard,

Amen my brothers!

I will sleep well tonight.

wintah,

September 23rd, 2005 11:23 PM
time is on my side Dan, Exile and Riffhard thank you for your post. You very eloquently describe the absurdity of comparing a band with minor league talent, THE BLACK CROWES to a band 2000 light years ahead of them in talent, the STONES.

In recent days and weeks, this board has been flooded with negative post from jcdesq and Saint Sway. While many on this board continue to warmly embrace their post apparently either finding them stimulating or funny (perhaps both), I totally disagree with their arguments which centers around the recent work by the STONES as being a very subpar effort. I continue to believe it's an excellent effort. In fact, as I personally had many doubts on what the STONES would be able create in 2005 (my feeling being that it would probably be a very average album), A Bigger Bang came as a pleasant surprise. In my opinion, it's their best work since TATTOO YOU.

I respect opinions that are different from mine. There have been some thoughful post by some on this board on why they were disappointed with ABB. We agree to disagree in our assessments. People are always going to have different taste in music. The problem I have with Saint Sway and jcdesq is they believe their opinions are the only ones that really matter. They must look upon themselves as unapproachable gods of musical taste. Only their ideas are the correct ones. Their views must take precedence over others so they must resort to flooding to insure that everyone knows the gods of musical taste have spoken.

sammy davis jr. Saiont Sway- I actually see where your'e coming from on many points, but the one thing you neglect to address: The Stones are 60+ fucking years old!! I mean the fact they can still rock at all is admirable. Let's see how "hard" and "tough" the Crowes' music is when they hit 60. At the age of the current Crowes, the Stones were still producing classic albums, at their peak really. But that was 20-30 years ago! I wish the Stones could still play boogie woogie rock n' roll like the days of yore, but those days are over.

My opinion also, time is on my side.
ABB exceeded my opinions I'm very happy to report.
Its a great Album, not a classic.

I also now respect the fact that some people didnt like ABB. I didnt like B2B to be honest.

fuck jcdesq and Saint Sway, their argument is ludicrous.
