Throwaway We all talk about these guitar solos that we all know, but there are several that are hardly mentioned, and many come from different names than the usual suspects (Gilmour, Beck, Hendrix, etc)..I'm talking about some gems. I'll do my best.

"In My Time of Dying" from Alvin Youngblood Hart's Motivational Speaker, solo by Audley Freed
-Builds to an awesome climax, it will really rock your soul. Alvin's slide work ain't too shabby either.

"Glad and Sorry" by the Faces, RW
Ok, so its Ronnie Wood, but it really is a beautiful moment for him. Not over the top, but very tasteful.

"She" by Kiss, solo by Ace Frehley
Not a big Kiss fan but Ace pulls off a good one here, and is later rehashed for McCready's solo in "Alive"

"Danger Bird" by Neil Young
He really pulls of a stunner here...brutal, gritty solo.

"Sixteen Candles" by the Stray Cats
I don't care if its a cover of a 1950s doo wop hit, Brian Setzer truly can play anything..and at times sounds a bit like Yardbirds era Jeff Beck.

Fiji Joe Ted Nugent - Stranglehold

Playing like a man possessed on that one

[Edited by Fiji Joe]
22nd August 2007 11:35 PM
Throwaway Got that right FJ...the way he bleeds the notes together is just one of the ways his solos rock the shit.
22nd August 2007 11:44 PM
Fiji Joe I might add BB King's "The Thrill is Gone"

Subtle genius...His guitar work on that tune is fantastic...a mood by itself

22nd August 2007 11:55 PM
Fiji Joe Yeah...there's a 12 minute version of "Winter" with Mick Taylor (and Carla Olson) that is probably the best guitar work I've ever heard...get it if you can...really makes you realize what they miss in MT

Chuck Clarence White's outro solo on 'Truck Stop Girl' by the Byrds. One of his finest.

23rd August 2007 12:06 AM
Zack I nominate Alvin Lee for Ten Years After's I'd Love to Change the World, especially the second part of the solo when the song's slowed down and gone back into the acoustic chord progression. Beautiful.
23rd August 2007 12:14 AM
Throwaway Yes, Taylors playing on Winter is truly beautiful. I don't even have to tell you all that, though. As for Lee, I always thought one of his best was on "The Bluest Blues". Though its from one of his later albums and not a great song production-wise, his solos are emotional and dont get boring despite being a longer song.
23rd August 2007 02:20 AM
Zack Don't know "Bluest Blues." Off what album?

As for Taylor with Carla Olson, his solo on Sway off "Too Hot for Snakes" is incredible. Frankly, much as I salivated over the prospect of an eight minute burner over Winter, it goes on a bit long . . .

BONOISLOVE This thread is lovely.

Stray Cat UK BB King's "How blue can you get?" live at Cook County Jail has the best extended intro of any song ever IMHO.

IT SMOKES !

It does indeed! Another great extended intro is the one on the live "Sweet Jane" from Lou Reed's 'Rock and Roll Animal'. Wagner and Hunter pull out all the stops.

Chuck That was finger pickin' good! Man, I've got to get a Tele with a B-bender.
23rd August 2007 10:25 AM
Chuck I always liked Jeff Beck's solo in "Shapes of Things"

It's from "1994" aka "I Hear You Rockin'". George Harrison actually guests on slide guitar on The Bluest Blues, he and Alvin had done some work together in the past.

Many of Taylors solos off that live album are great; his tone is unmistakable. "Within an Ace" comes to mind.

Ron - Josephine.

I saw a beach, I could smell the shore

When all the while I'm in a Woolworth store...

Most anything Keith & Ronnie solo.

Steel Wheels Keith Richards' solo in "You Got Me Rocking" is one of the best solos ever. I love it.

steel driving hammer No disrespectable, but YGMR solo is good yes, but too lame.
23rd August 2007 12:32 PM
Throwaway Even though he isn't a technical whiz, I always liked Mick Jones tone on "Brand New Cadillac"..the solo is short and to the point.

Yeah, I know what you mean, sometimes these little short solo's come across so strong, I loved Mick Jones solo on the end of "Stay Free" another short solo, that's actually more of a rhythm solo, is Nick Lowe "Cruel To Be Kind" I loved the solo in "Back on the Chaingang" from Pretenders guitarist, loved Jeff Beck on "Blue Wind", there's so many to think off.
