anyone know what this song is exactly about?A friend of mine says it's political but I tend to think there's more.
Aside form that,is there a website that explains the meanings to some of the stone songs over the years? If so,let me know and thanks.:-) |

Shattered, shattered
Love and hope and sex and dreams
Are still surviving on the street
Look at me - I'm in tatters!
I'm a shattered.
Shattered
Friends are so alarming
And my lover's never charming
Life's just a cocktail party - on the street
Big Apple
People dressed in plastic bags
Directing traffic
Some kind of fashion
Shattered
Laughter, joy, and loneliness and sex and sex and sex and sex
Look at me - I'm in tatters I 'm a shattered
Shattered
All this chitter-chatter, chitter-chatter, chitter-chatter 'bout
Shmatta, shmatta, shmatta -- I can't give it away on 7th Avenue
This town's been wearing tatters (shattered, shattered)
Work and work for love and sex
Ain't you hungry for success, success, success, success
Does it matter? (Shattered) Does it matter?
I'm shattered. Shattered
Ahhh, look at me - I'm a shattered
I'm a shattered
Look at me - I'm a shattered, yeah
Pride and joy and greed and sex
That's what makes our town the best
Pride and joy and dirty dreams and still surviving on the street
and look at me - i'm in tatters, yeah
I've been battered, what does it matter
Does it matter, uh-huh
Does it matter, uh-huh, I'm a shattered
Don't you know the crime rate is going up, up, up, up, up!
To live in this town you must be tough, tough, tough, tough, tough!
You got rats on the west side
Bed bugs uptown
What a mess this town's in tatters I've been shattered
My brain's been battered - splattered - all over Manhattan
Uh-huh, This town's full of money grabbers
Go ahead
Bite the Big Apple, don't mind the maggots, huh
Shadoobie, My brain's been battered
My friends they come around they
Flatter, flatter, flatter, flatter, flatter, flatter, flatter!
Pile it up, pile it high on the platter |

lyrically Mick was on fire! |

I think it's sorta an NYC-bashing song, talking about how shitty it was there in the late 70s, but I'm not 100% sure. Check out this link, though, it's got everything u need for Stones song info: http://www.timeisonourside.com/SOShattered.html |

It's pretty obvious it's about New York...
We do know that Anybody Seen My Baby, isn't about a missing child on a milk carton, right? |
|
Soldatti |
100% about NY according to Mick. |

Seems like he is talking about the fake people and platonic sex that goes on in New York. I have been there but was too young about what really goes on there. It almost like he is describing a Sex in the City episode. A bunch of people having sex to improve their social status at whatever cost.

Idiocy abounds. It's about NYC in the 70's when Democrats were in charge. They thought the seediness of 42nd Street was inspiring. Things are much better here now. |

What? No seediness? Pfft - Gimme Melbourne any day, then. |

pretty much spot on, hence the "bite the big apple/dont mind the maggots" line
Most of Jagger's songs on "Some Girls" have a New York theme (eg its namechecked it Miss You, When the whip comes down, etc)
He mentioned in an interview around the time about the NEw York theme being something of a microcosm of the US in general. |

Ronnie Richards |
I wouldnt call this a political song - it's got more of a philosophical vibe to it. I mean, "Life's just a cocktail party on the street", that is just so true , yknow, on some many levels..

Gazza |
quote: Some Guy wrote:

Lyrically, the "Some Girls" album was his highpoint as a writer
Quite a return to past glories with that one. |

"Undercover" was Mick's last great lyrical output. Using lyrics as a benchmark, "Undercover of the Night" has to be one of the Top 5 songs he's ever written. |

Egbert |
What is (a) "schmatta"? |
|
Rambler |
Yeah I was asking myself the same thing.... |
|
Mel Belli |
Yiddish for "garment" or "rag," I believe. |
|
glencar |
Yes, that's correct. As in: "Oy vey, she's wearing THAT schmatta???" |
|
MrPleasant |
I thought it was about México.
Why did you have to SHATTER my dreams?!?!? |

Actually, it does. And, ironically, it feels like "living" once you kill one of your neighbours. |

Can you kill one of mine too? |
