sirmoonie What's yours?

These lists are stupid, but I've been making them in my head since I was 9 years old, because I'm stupid, so here goes:

1. Hey, Hey What Can I Do - Zep's best song by significant margin - another JJFesque tragedy from the days singles didn't make it to albums. My problem with Zep was despite the incredible playing and songwriting, most of the time they never put an sincerity into it, like the Stones and Who did for most of their music. But on this song, Zep put it all there, and Plant came off as believable for once.

2. When The Levee Breaks - don't know howe the anti-Zeps here can't admire this amazing song.

3. In The Evening - holy Christ fuck, what a power tune, the guitar is amazing, that riff over and over and over and over - too bad Plant was singing, almost wish it was an instrumental.

4. Ramble On - Marred by the stupid Tolkein reference - WTF, why deliberately appeal to high school geeks, they'll buy it anyway - but the song had a brilliant guitar and chorus.

4. Tangerine - amazing guitar, to me. And they add some much needed pop to it.

5. Bring It On Home - the guitar - Page really was amazing.

6. Black Country Woman - their best attempt at Stonesian blues - falls way short, but still cool.

7. Out On The Tiles

8. Whole Lotta Love - damn did this song bore the living hell out of me and tens of millions of others, but if you really listen to the parts when they aren't being deliberate weirdos, the power of the band shines.

Okay, Top 8 Zep.

BTW, any band that actually decided it was a good idea to put annoying music like Moby Dick and Immigrant Song on ANY album, much less their two best ones, can never attain elite god-status like the Stones and The Who. Thats something that bands like Queen and REM do.

I haven't listened to them too much since 1990 either, but all this Pugsly-JB talk got me going, and I've been playing them all week. Its weird, because your list is pretty much why I stopped listening to them.

Good post, mine are

Houses of the Holy (what a RIFF)
Custard Pie (Berry-esque solo, grooves well)
When the Levee Breaks (you know the deal)
You Shook Me (yes its a cover, but all members' playing is on the mark)
HHWCID (good, wish they did it live though)
Tangerine (their best pop song)
Nobodys Fault But Mine (one of a handful of their songs better live than on the album)
Rock and Roll (uptempo boogie like none other)
Ten Years Gone (sung well and nice guitar layering)
Celebration Day (bassline is awesome, who cares if you cant understand the lyrics)
