Tom Has Charlie ever played a drum solo live on stage? Is there any recording available?

Mel Belli Thank God, no and no!

F505 A drum solo can be exciting though. I remember some real good ones (Brian Blade for example). But Charlie is not the person who I associate with drum solos.

J.J.Flash Ian Paice is a true genius. Neil Peart I have to admit is a geat drummer, but I think he is really overrated. What about Ginger Baker huh? That surely IS the guy. What about Keith Moon, Joey?!?!

polytoxic Yes! Charlie did one at Massey Hall in Toronto a few years back when he toured with his sextet.

He actually got up and talked to the audience(!!!!!)
at the end of the show -said thank you, mentioned some jazz greats that had played the hall before, and then said he was going to try something he's never done. He then sat down and after a couple of false starts, did a short- about three minute -Buddy Rich style solo, bowed and quietly left the stage. End of show.

Gazza Nice story.

Hope he restricts it to the jazz stuff. Thats the place for such self-indulgence.

There are few things more boring in rock 'n' roll than extended drum solos.

thejuf Massey Hall is special to any jazz fan, since the famous Jazz at Massey Hall concert back in 1953 featured only the very best: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus and Max Roach.

Charlie spoke about this fabulous concert a couple of years ago on BBC Radio. He said he doesn't like drumsolos, but the one Max Roach did on Salt Peanuts at Massey Hall was special to him.

buy this album, it is staggering!!

Well it depends on the side you're looking; ask the musicians (other than the drummer), the drum solo it's time to recharge you know, they love it even that rarely listen to it

shakedhandswithkeith I hate drum solos, but the Santana Rhythem Section is unbelievably good. they play drums, congas, bongos, timbales, cowbells aso for 10 - 15 minutes. that`s grooves and rocks.

I don't think so, but if Chuck Leavell and Darryl Jones got solos in this last tours maybe Charlie is the next!

telecaster I remember that John Bonham was pissed because Karen Carpenter ranked higher than he did on some magazine
"Best Drummer" polls

I think it was "Cream" magazine

Anyone have an extra 25 minutes to spare for "Moby Dick?"

I would actually like to see Charlie do a jazz solo as long as it is under 3 minutes

That is all....carry on

Happy Motherfucker!! The Rythme Devils- Micky and Billy from the Grateful Dead are some of the best in the business! Drums has always been a big part of their shows and it's always a different groove every night.

Great album indeed, espcially considering Parker was playing a borrowed plastic saxophone. His own was in the pawn shop. His heroin habit kept him broke pretty much all the time.

Keith Moon's solos were mostly impromptu rave-up codas at the end of My Generation and the like. Agree with Joey that his whole career was sort of like one long solo, but he is on the record saying they are "fucking boring."
