Rockers find craze they can really dig

Nov 28 2004

Sunday Mercury

It hardly sounds like the hobby some of the wildest men in rock'n'roll would dig.

But the gentle pastime of metal-detecting has become all the rage for a growing number of
rockers.

Stars including Rolling Stones legends Keith Richards and Bill Wyman spend the day
trawling the countryside in the hope of uncovering treasure.

And they wouldn't be able to do it without the help of Midlander Archie Cole, who has
designed the specialist tools to help them dig deep.

Archie, who runs Black Advanced Digging Aids, in West Bromwich, said: "Bill buys a lot of
stuff from me, both for himself and for his mates.

"They're really into metal detecting and travel all over the place. There are special
medieval sites where you can go metal-detecting.

"Metal-detecting is a hobby for thousands of people in the Midlands."

Other self-confessed metal-heads include Alan Atkins - the original singer of Birmingham
rock band Judas Priest - as well as guitar legend Jeff Beck.

"Metal-detecting has become all the rage for many rock stars," said Archie. "It's such a
relaxing and exciting hobby. "Some people like to go fishing and some people might go
swimming, but I simply love detecting.

"You get a massive buzz out of finding something that's so ancient.

"I've been doing it for years now and it never gets boring. I've found all sorts of
things from coins to cannonballs."

The pastime might bring a lucky few some riches, but a top-ofthe-range metal detector
would cost £3,000, although good cheaper models are available.

Archie added: "Bill and Keith have both had a few good finds including a Victorian silver
coin which was worth quite a lot. But I don't think they're in it for the money."

Archie first began making metal-detecting tools in 1989 after a conversation with rocker
pal Alan. He launched his business soon afterwards.

"Alan said it would be a great idea if I started mass-producing digging tools," he
explained. "I told him I'd only do it if he started writing music again.

"At first he refused. But he thought the digging equipment was such a great idea that he
went back into the recording studio so I would start up my own company." Alan is now in
the middle of his fifth solo album.
