Yes ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Happy Jack is happy to report The Who were kicking ass all night long and brought their A-game for a hot night in Hotlanta. I was F2 row J toward the center and had an excellent view of all the proceedings.
The sound was loud and crystal clear, much better than the 2000 show in Phillips arena, and 1996 show at Lakewood, at least where my seats were. I thought the 5 moving screens were great, entertaining, added a lot while not distracting from the show. Two thumbs up for the video guys who put that together. One minor quibble was one blue back light behind Pete during Wire and Glass than didn't move for about 8-9 minutes that pretty much made it impossible to look at Pete during those songs.
This is very much the Pete and Roger show. The others are adequate musicians, but The Two are why we spend the big bucks. Both bring 110% to every song and it is still a pleasure to watch them work after all these years.
Pete is still the hottest and best live guitarist on the planet, even if he isn't quite at the early 70s level any more. Rather than jumping and screaming as I do for many shows, I found myself mostly just standing and listening in amazement, mesmerized at his playing. Roger still sings everything straight from the heart. His range is no where near where it was, and struggles on some songs, particularly a few of the new ones like Mike Post, but it doesn't matter at all. Rock singing is about bringing from the soul, and nobody belts out a song like Roger. You really do expect to see those arteries in his neck explode one day, LOL! The man is still a dynamo!
Sparks always has been one of my favorite songs, and was a clear highlight among many others for me last night. My Generation/Cry If You Want was long and smoking. I am not sure why I am surprised by this, perhaps because I have seen both so many times and in hundreds of videos, but Baba and WGFA were absolutely incredible. Full of energy and rocking like hell. These are simply two of the best rock songs ever written. The DVDs don't do either justice, or they were exceptional versions last night.
This brings me to a point I won't belabor because it has been beaten to death elsewhere, but there is no subsitute for great songs. A catalog of tremendous songs can often make up for sloppy playing. Excellent playing cannot save mediocre songs. I really enjoyed Fragments, and as a whole enjoyed Wire and Glass, although it has clear highs and lows for me. As great as the show was, I think it would be even better if they could work in some more rarities or truly great songs they have written. I have my own opinions what they should add and for what, but there are plenty of other places to discuss that.
As much as I love Pete's playing, for those who never heard the Who in their prime, with no disrespect to the great talents of Pino, there was only one Ox and his presence and sound is missed, a lot more so than Moon. Moon brought the energy, excitement and craziness that made the original Who as great a live act as there was, but it was John's bass that drove many of my favorite live songs. The whole was greater than the sum of it's 4 individuals. Still, they are a tremendous live act that kicked serious ass all night long.
Pete did acknowledge the trouble people go through to get tickets while thanking us for coming. My opinion is he is very much aware of the situation, but can't do any more about the monopoly than we can.
It was great to meet a few Wholligans before the show, even if briefly. Where was everyone after the show? Back at home or at the the hotel doing reviews? I wish the Who would keep touring if only to build up a network of Wholligans who know how to party. I hope those of you going to the Philly tailgate do it right and bring some enthusiasm and comraderie. I really do hope they add a show somewhere that those in the north and south can both drive to. There are a few crazy bastards on this board I know I would like to do a show with in style.
That's it for now. I am hungry and it is Turkey Day. Happy Thanksgiving y'all. May The Who come to a city near you very soon.
Thank you Pete and Roger. |

Just got home BUT the show was amazing. The band seemed to have ALOT of energy. Pete was windmilling like crazy, Rog whipped his mic one time and almost took out PINO.. Crowd was very loud and appreciative. One thing I hated was most people sat during wire and glass, we stood and the band played on... Setlist was pretty much in line..
They did play AAA.. Encore was pinball wizard, etc.. I was havin too much fun to write the setlist down.. Other songs played Emminence front, my generation,WGFA, Baba Oreily, Cry if you want (amazing), Who are you, man in a purple dress, tea and theatre, cant explainand more...
When introducing the band Pete said he had just spoken with RABBITT and that his wife SUE was near the end. He mentioned that Rabbit was be back with the band soon. My cheers go out to Rabbitts teck Brian who did a fine job. He did play piano some on YBYB... Pretenders were very good and they played close to a full house for there last 4 or 5 songs. The crowd appreciated them alot.
Zak Starkey is fucking BRILLIANT. and played earily similar to Keith. Pino did a dine job and Simon was excellent and sings great backing vocals.
Pete and Rog look so good for there age and performed very atheltically tonight.
Well thats what I know.. Great show..
Cheers,
Josh

ONE FUNNY THING I FORGOT TO MENTION..
a kid that looked to be all of 12 or 13 years old ran on the stage and pumped his fist in the air to the crowd. He was immediately grabbed and escorted out. I thought this was hilarious. I'm sure the kid will n ever forget that huh?

My sister and I just back. The show was great and the crowd stood during most of it.
Met Happy Jack and Madrav and a few other fans at the Loafing Leprechaun which had a raucus crowd. Happy Jack had his Stones shirt on! He was going to change before the show...we later saw him crossing the floor with his new WHO shirt on! Nice, HJ!
The setlist was like the other shows - Pete told a story about being in Atlanta and messing up his wrist real bad. He had to stay 3 extra days to "get his wrist reattached to his hand". He then proceeded to say he would try to mess up his wrist again tonight!
Baba O'Reilly was awesome as was My Generation.
My sister saw the initial show 9/12 in Philly and said there was more jamming at this show. Perhaps to save Rog's voice?
Hi this is me, the sister. Yes I saw the opening night in Philly and it was SO great to see them again in Atlanta. Both crowds were totally into it. Impossible to sit down, emotional experience. At the end you don't want them to leave. Pete puts his arm around Roger and they stand there on the front of the stage, and you get the feeling that they don't want to leave either. Don't want this era to end.........WHO is making music like this today? WHO?
Roger's voice did seem slightly more strained tonight than the first night of the tour (of course) and there was a lot more jamming, and time when he wasn't singing. But, when he did it was still amazing. He doesn't hold back during WGFA or Baba! Pete was fired up tonight, he talked most of the time.
The Tommy encore included a long jam tonight, followed by See Me, Feel Me.......after about a 5 minute jam. Tea and Theatre was poignant and with a lot of emotion.
Rog and Pete seem very grateful and close to their fans. It's clear that they have great affection for those of us who love their music with such a passion.
It was a great show!

We also really liked the stage set up.. Nothing to flashy, but really loved the 3 screens behind the band. Really thought the pictures went well with the songs. Especially on My Generation, cant explain and Real Good Looking Boy. Roger mentioned how much Elvis inspired him. The pic sof Elvis were excellent.

All I can say I WOW. Just got settled in the hotel room, but I doubt I'll be sleeping for a long time.
I’ve listened to a lot of this tour on Sirius, but this was the first gig I’ve actually seen. All of the songs seemed especially different tonight, including an insane My Generation! Roger did the extended “Hope I die before I get olds” that Pete normally does, and then they just went nuts. I was in shock There was a really, really long continuous part of CIYW as well….great!
I was on the floor in F5, E11, and from there, the mix seemed perfect. Roger’s voice, which I was sort of worried about, sounded great all night, way higher and stronger than it seems when all the background noise has been stripped away on the encore CDs or on Sirius.
Pete was on FIRE, although he did seem to have guitar problems during Sparks, right before the Birdman would have taken place. After a few seconds of tuning, he went right back and it was FANTASTIC. Somehow, right before See, Me, Feel Me, he literally twirled off the problematic red guitar and ended up with the new one over his shoulders. Very cool . Unfortunately, it was slightly harder to see Pete than Roger; there was about a 6’2” guy standing in his direction, and I’m only 5’2”. Thank goodness for tall shoes!
The setlist was the same as Florida and most of the other gigs, but who cares? As for Can’t Explain—Can’t think of a better opener, and all the new stuff seemed to fit in well. A lot of people sat down, but not too many where I was sitting (and, by the way, the venue did look very close to being sold out—a great feat for the day before Thanksgiving!!). Only two people on the floor seemed to get up and leave, during MIAPD, but a lot of people left before Tea & Theatre because it took them a while to get it going. I think Roger’s mike broke; he switched microphones really quickly and ended up spilling his tea all over the place, then stomped on the broken mike. It was quite funny .
Every song was fantastic, although now I’m somewhat nervous to see how it really sounds tomorrow night on Sirus; if it even sounds half as good, I’ll be very, very happy. I’ll post more tomorrow, if I ever get off this endless, endless musical high

A very interesting night I might say. Let me tell you how it went for me -
First of all I pissed and moaned about The Who not coming to Atlanta after the 2000 tour. Then I pissed and moaned about them coming to Atlanta for this tour because of ticket price$. I pretty much pissed and moaned to the point where Slipkid said to "stop bitching about the set-list, ticket prices, change the channel...." et al.
Soooooooooooooo......... I went. I had a $50 bill. That's all the cash I was going to bring. I decided the hour and a half drive through traffic from Marietta was going to be hell, and it was.
I didn't bother to go to the LL to get liquored up, first I had to find a scalper! And find one I did. It was 8:00 p.m. when I purchased it; lower bowl seat, section 107 for $50! I never made it to my seat - I was walking around the arena and I saw a person I knew from Detroit who works in the Rock and Roll community for various artist. He was working security for The Who on this tour. (He asked that I don't mention his name because I said I was going to blog on The Who's site) I was able to tour the arena with him and go where he went.
Long story short; I met Chrissie Hynde! What I saw of their set was brilliant. During The Who's set my friend had to skeedaddle so I was again roaming the venue catching their show from different locals. The Who did an outstanding job. I think they made up for not coming to Atlanta the last few tours.
After the show I was able to go backstage and mingle with a lot of people who I din't even know. Then I saw him - Pete! Sadly I didn't talk to him other then saying out loud "Great show Pete, Thanks for coming back to Atlanta!" He smiled and kept on going. He had somewhere to go I suppose. He looked good for a 61 year old rocker. Very blue eyes. I had met Pete in Detroit on November 30 1979 after their show at the Masonic Temple (27 years ago, I was 15) and got his autograph. It was like seeing an Uncle you hadn't seen in years. Too wild.
Somehow it all seemed to work out for me in the end. My girlfriend was very cool about the whole thing - me going to a concert by myself. (she isn't a fan - she'll learn). I feel I have something else to be Thankful for on this day.
Stranger things have happened I'm sure.

What everyone else said...plus Zak RULES!!! This was my fifth Who show with Zak, and maybe he stood out because I had such a clear view of the stage, or maybe Zak just RULES!!!
I really like this version of the band. Simon is super important. They really need his backing vocals! Simon and Pino seem to have established a certain rapport on stage. They seemed to watch each other a lot. Those two plus Zak and you've got a great backing band. I didn't miss Rabbit. It's awful what his family is going through. I just prefer some songs without the organ, e.g., ICE.
Roger's voice was in great shape. There were a few times when he struggled, but mostly he belted them out. Even Pete's voice was in relatively good shape. He didn't bark as much as he does sometimes.
The Pretenders were lots of fun. Chrissie Hynde has a very sassy stage persona.

Truth be known, I IM'd a fellow Who fan on this site and told them that I had planned on going all along!
I just wanted to rant and rave about the stupid set list and outrageous ticket prices.
I'm a WHO fan dammit. You didn't think I'd go?
And yes Bomber, you're correct along with all the others who told me to go!

I forgot to mention one amusing foul up. When it came time for Roger to sing the second verse in WAY (I took the tube back out of town) he sang the third one instead (I know there's a place you walked). I just imagined Pete thinking, "He's singing the wrong verse!" and Roger thinking, "I'm singing the wrong verse!" I was really afraid Roger had forgotten the words to the second verse, in which case he would have had to sing the third one a second time. Fortunately, he substituted the second verse for the the third thus singing all verses the correct number of times, though in the wrong order.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, Happy Jack is happy to report The Who were kicking ass all night long and brought their A-game for a hot night in Hotlanta. I was F2 row J toward the center and had an excellent view of all the proceedings.
Hi HJ ,
I looked forward to reading your review and it did not disappoint, I think we have the same view after all these years of watching similar bands, although I must admit I like the Stones but don't crave them and your allegiance to Coop almost made me attend a show.
This version of the Who is Pete & Roger with Pete streching out more with what would have been solo material on Endless Wire. I miss Keith & John , and swore that after I walked out of the House Of Blues show in Sept.2002 that I would never see the Who live again.... and I believed that until they announced the 2004 shows and I went to Boston, MSG and the rest is history,
Happy Turkey Day to HJ, CH, Larry Dee, Foadloam, Lipschitz, whoareyou, Both Brians in atlanta and LA, and everyone else who regularly posts ( Bomber, I didn't forget you)
I enjoy the boards and thank you to Maria for keeping everyone in their corner of the ring,

great reviews everyone ...do not know if I can add anything ...I really think the crowd help make the show what it was ... when the pretenders started and everyone was cheering and standing and the place was almost full then...I told my buddy that we may be in for something speical.
I was on the floor in F8 and the sound was very load and CLEAR.My 15 yr
old son was really into it ... great show for his 1st REAL concert. man in a purple dress has become one of his favorite songs( mine too) and we sang every line with Roger .. and I must admit that I was a bit surprised by how many where singing along also. The crowd participation on the classics was great ... a great show .. i hope they add Nashville or Memphis,if so I'll be on my way
Happy Jack .. were you at the LL on the patio ?... I'm glad everyone had a great time ...

Echo what Bomber said. Told you so. EP, you weren't fooling me one iota. Knew you'd go even up to the bitter end. And HJ, knew once you got into the environment, it'd become electric once again. Thanks for the reviews.
EP, pleased to hear you got back stage. Tough luck with the Lions, though. Typical.

I know I had a splendid time!
Our seats were far back, but I left my husband and his friend, walked around and was allowed to sit front row first balcony on Pete's side where I promptly resided in heaven!
I just text-messaged hubby that I was staying put and I jumped and squealed and danced and sang like a teeny-bopper. They were amazing.
My husband had never seen them live and came out with an appreciation for The Who that he'd never felt. He said, "Pete is a fucking genius!" And I hat-tipped him for using the proper "f-word" terminology when discussing a Townshend performance.
Their energy knows no bounds, the playing was tight and the only miss was the fact that Rabbit was off tending to his wife (not that I blame him!)
I drove from Knoxville, TN through afternoon, holiday rush-hour Atlanta traffic with a wobbly knee on a straight-shift clutch just to see these guys and would do it all over again!
Great show!

I actually think he's improved in a mello sort of way - although I was too young to have SEEN them live in the 70s, I certainly have heard live performances from that time.
I think his style has perhaps changed somewhat - but, either way, I agree that he is the hottest and best live guitarist on the planet!

A Beautiful Review .......
Thanks Jumping Jack !!!!!
