Well, I don't necessarily equate "great live" with "sounds like the record" -- in fact, when I see a band live, I don't want just a rehash of the record. One of the reasons I love the Stones is because they don't always sound like the record.
But...having said that, the Cars had a great ability to manipulate the audience -- they knew exactly how to get reactions -- to the point that people literally rioted when I saw them at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in '80 when Candy Oh! came out!! I don't listen to them all that much anymore, but at the time, I really liked them boys from Boston! |

GREAT album:

I actually agree, Nasty. Led by Just What I Needed, it was a strong album all the way through.
They started recycling themselves soon after that though, and overstayed their welcome by a few albums. Towards the end, they were as bad as 80s music could get. |

If you could take those awful sounding keyboards off their records they would be a good band...those cheezy synths really make them sound dated.. |

Great Boston band.
Owned the town back in the early 80's.
Huge group at the time.
Had the groove of that time down straight.
Good dvd in the shops out now featuring
a performance on German TV.
Presently...
Ric Okasek vp @ Electra Records
Elliot Easton plays in the Creedence Revisted band
Benjamin Orr, singer on "Just What I Needed", "Candy O", "Drive" and others, passed on in 2000 from
pancreatic cancer
Not certain whereabouts of Keyboard player Greg Hawkes
or Drummer David Robinson
For the record, at one time, in the late 70'S, early 80's, Boston was fortunate enough to have active bands at the same time including:
The Cars
Aerosmith
Boston
J Geils Band

Loved the Cars.
Elliot Easton was/is a hugely underated guitarist.
One of the best things about them was the clarity of sound they achived. In the late 70's and early 80's when stereo systems and speakers hit another level in sound production, the Cars we a great band to crank.
I feel the same way about the Talking Heads and B52's.
Not even close to the Stones but a guilty pleasure none the less.

I have only 2 singular impressions of "The Cars" leaving out "Drive". First one is witnessing the promo video (aired heavily by MTV during the early 90's) of "My Best Friend's Girl". I'd assume this is a live cut (vocals at least) of some TV show. Second impression of mine is Ric O.'s contribution to the "Rumanian Angels" Sampler (? - the right title). The audio track which had been included on this disc was a great example of "retro rock" indeed. Loved it. |
