Topic: So your band needs a 90-Minute Setlist And You've Got a Stones Medley Stuck In Your Head... Return to archive

TheSavageYoungXyzzy Long title, no?

So the band I'm in needs a 90-minute setlist, fast. We're gettin' a couple of gigs, the first of which is at a 'college venue' (read: wild party in which everyone and anyone will be plastered within the first twenty minutes) about a month-and-a-half/two months away (when they come back on campus in January). I figure they'll let me sing two/three songs spread out over the set, as I'm the newcomer and my tastes are decidedly archaic to them. (They're hard rockers of the Nirvana-ripoff generation, at least the lead singer is. The rest of us are more of a funk group) I've already picked "Before They Make Me Run", as it's a damn great party song and I can sing it. I've written a slow "Love In Vain"-esque blues number that makes (with a nod to the cigarette-master) liberal use of the slide guitar. But the third number...

I was thinking... How would a medley of "Don't Lie To Me" followed by "Route 66" followed by "Had It With You" sound? They'll all be raunchy cuts - like December's Children stuff, and we'll punk up "Don't Lie To Me", probably. It'd be a loose number, everyone takes a solo, drums & bass too.

Whaddya think? I accidentally muttered while humming "Route 66" 'Let's talk it over babe, 'fore we start...' and it just came up.

Man... now I want the Stones to play that medley.

gypsy Sounds great to me, tSYX!

beer A medley of "Don't lie to me", Route 66" then for the third number:

"She said yeah" or

"Get off My Cloud" or

"19th nervous Breakdown"

perfect for a party cuz everyone will know Route 66 or Get off my cloud, so the crowd should dig it.

TheSavageYoungXyzzy Hmm... I'd love to do "She Said Yeah", and in fact that's probably gonna be my request for the opening number and we'll blow through it in a minute-thirty and end up on the floor. It's such a hyper-paced song on December's Children/Out Of Our Heads (UK) that to slow it down to fit in better with "Route 66", fast as it is, would do "She Said Yeah" injustice. "19th Nervous Breakdown"s too peppy a number to fit in with the old-school snarl, plus we'd have to change the key. "Get Off Of My Cloud" has a lot of the same issues - we'd really have to speed it up, spit out the lyrics, change the key and so forth. I like "Had It With You" as the third number for now because it really is based off of "Route 66" - Just imagine at the end of the chorus of "Route 66":

You can get yer kicks, on Route 66!
(rhythm guitar solo)
Well I love ya dirty fucker (guitar answer)
Sister and yer brother (guitar answer)

We'd be de-countrifying "Had It With You" a bit to fit it into "Route 66", making the lead snarl an answer to each line rather than playing harmonies to the rhythm until the chorus.

We'd do the first and slow last verse of "Had It With You" at the end, with the chorus and so forth, and then as it sped up towards the end, just kick back and yell "You can get yer kicks, on Route 66..."

I dunno. "Had It With You" has that ease-of-use option, but I'm still lookin' for others. If they could live with a chord change after "Route 66", "Starfucker" a la Love You Live might be a nice one to stick in.

-tSYX --- Yeah, Ally McGraw got mad with you...

luxury1 OK, TSYI (or however you do your handle). You a bass player, right? Well, have you heard Criss Cross Man? It has the best rollicking bass line ever. It drives the whole fucking song. And it is a dirty Stonsian bluesy rocker with great lyrics. Do you know it????????

gypsymofo60 Forget everything previous, what really works is this; JJF segues into a brief Sympathy, segues into Iorr..And this throws 'em Hey Negrita and then bring the crowd in with "It's a Honky Tonk......you know what I need babe! sing it! .....Are ya feelin' good, are ya feelin' loose? and then you do an original, only Stones songs segue into originals....TRUST ME!!

VoodooTattoo What college are you playing at TSYZ?

VoodooTattoo A frat house or what? They may not like anything that isnt geared towards rap or Creed or some shit, so get ready to tell them to fuck off...after you collect your fee of course.
