Topic: Review of Mick Taylor at "Rampelys" 27/10-2006. Return to archive

JumpingKentFlash In our little group we were 5 people. We went from Horsens so we could be there in time. Hoping for my father to get a ticket for the show as he didn't have one. Everything was sold out though. The concert place "Rampelys" has existed since 1995 and this was the first the place was sold out in those 11 years. We got in while my dad wrote himself on the list to get tickets. He would know if he could go inside at 21.45 (Some 15 minutes before the concert was supposed to start). I met JustInCaseBandDK and Tilst-mile from this forum, along with another guy who I can't remember the name of. We talked a bit. JustInCaseBandDK and I talked a bit about his band and I'll go to try-outs with them perhaps. I think they need a new guitarist.
A warm-up was scheduled. It was a guy from the middle of Jutland. He played Mississippi blues, which is the kind of blues I like most alongside Chicago blues. I liked this very much. It was just this guy and his National guitar (The silver Brothers In Arms front cover guitar..... you know). He ended his set. I liked it very much. "Kicking Mule Blues", "I Can't Be Satisfied" and "Touch My Meal, I'll Make You Squeal" was some of the songs he played. 10 minutes 'till Taylor. My dad got in. Somebody didn't get their tickets in time (Their loss).
Wentus Blues Band walked on stage and started. They did 3 blues numbers I didn't know. They were a good band though. You could hear that they knew their stuff. After 3 numbers they introduced Mick Taylor. He walked on stage. I had to move to let him by. I thought: "So that's him eh?". I had expected some wild reaction of myself, but it didn't happen. The concert place was good, but not exactly a place where you usually go mad, and I think that sort of contributed to me not going nuts over seeing him for the first time (Yes. This was a first for me). Let me note here that I can't remember all the songs they played, but I remember the Stones songs. The first one they did was "Stop Breaking Down". I was ready to hear that vibrato that people talked about. I was a bit disappointed though. First time hearing him and he sure as hell made a some mistakes. After reading about him on the internet, I had this image of him being the perfect guitar player and all. He wasn't. Not at all. There was a pretty good reason though. Mick Taylor was as drunk as the guys you have standing on your average street corner. That's right. He was totally wasted. He didn't seem to want to do the gig very much. I just thought it was fun. I was there to see him and it wasn't exactly a let-down, but it was a bit different than what I had thought. Moreover, I'm not a big fan of that kind of blues, but Taylor lifted the gig because he did manage to get some great licks across. It may sound harsh, but when you read this you're not supposed to think it was bad. I enjoyed it as much as I could with a drunk Taylor and a kind of blues I'm not a fan of (I call it fart-blues, because it's usually boring family daddy blues. This was the same, but with a Taylor twist that made it better than the usual fart-blues). Anyway. "Ventilator Blues" was played with Wentus Blues Band frontman Juha singing. He did a good job singing it. Taylor was off on the slide sometimes, but it came over well. They also did this song that was a of Clapton's Layla, All Along The Watchtower (I think) and a Dylan song. That was one of the best of the night for sure. The best song was a Stones song though. "No Expectations". It's a different arrangement. More poppy. I liked it very much though. Taylor only played rythm on it (I think he forgot to take the distortion off the guitar though). That was very, very good. They also did "Can't You Hear Me Knocking". It had some mistakes, but also came off well. A shame that they don't play the entire song. It was just the instrumental part. I liked it. It was the last song they did. Good show for sure. The way I feel after seeing it is that it's probably the best concert of that kind of blues that I have seen. I was never lifted into heaven though. But that's surely because of the variety of factors being a) Taylor was drunk, b) It wasn't a "go mad" setting and c) I'm not a fan of that kind of blues.
I won't bother with the "Stones should get Taylor back" remarks or the "Ronnie vs. Taylor" remarks and all that kind of crap. It's not important. I know what I feel after seeing this and I don't wanna get an e-mail about it.
I got some good pictures that I'll get made at the shop soon. At one point Taylor went over to where I was (The side of the stage) and got down on his knees. I then went down on my knees and got some great snapshots of him.
After the show Taylor staggered out and went up into the band room with Wentus Blues Band (BTW: You gotta experience the singer of this band. He has the weirdest moves). Some people were all over him and, by the advice of ErikJJF, I didn't wanna jump him like a crazy person. He went to the band room and I was very tired. So we just drove home. Didn't really feel like waiting for him. For all I know he could be sitting up there for hours. He also said from the stage that they (He and the band) had to go to Sweden) in a while (Next concert is today (28/10) in Sweden) I didn't talk to him and I didn't get an autograph (And he wasn't in the best of moods either). Maybe next time. Hopefully...

star star its quite upsetting that he's let himself go like this... i just hope he's relatively happy with himself and his life. after your review, i think i'll pass on seeing him if he ever comes to England again. I have spent a large proportion of my teen years trying to spread the word about Taylor's beautiful touch to my friends (as the high and mighty micktaylor.net always tells fans to do), and back in september backed out going to see him in newcastle with a guy who wanted to see the man (the legend) in action. Im quite glad i didnt go! i think if he was like this i would be embarrassed i ever said he was a superb guitarist. Glad you had fun JKF!

Boogie-Woogie i think he really shows his brilliance in work with some speical folks like the stones or john mayall!!!

its never the same if you play with other people, so there was a strong chemistry between keith and taylor if you have a look at their playing.

i just got the blues from laurel canyon disc and i like it better than the holy beano album ;-)

The Wick I saw him live a few years ago in this tiny bar and he was pretty much how you describe. He looked like he was still on drugs. His playing is not even a shadow of what it used to be. He started with You Got to Move and it was terrible. Same with pretty much everything, apart from a couple instrumentals and on a jam he broke into Can't You Hear Me Knocking, no singing though and that was great. His band was pretty solid though, Middleton was magic.

Of course I'll post them. As soon as they get made at the shop. I have pics of The Stones in Horsens, the building of the stage at pretty close range (In Horsens also), the Rolling Stones Weekend in Horsens and Mick Taylor at "Rampelys" last Friday. I'll get them all done at the same time and throw them on the web...... When they've been made.
