HardKnoxDurtySox for you guitar players out there; what is your favorite way to get the "keef" sound? like as far as pedals and amps etc.
10-10-03 12:57 AM
sammy davis jr. Run a '52 Tele in open G tuning (capo to taste) straight into a Fender Twin Reverb, Champ, or Bassman amp, turn it up loud- and voila!

SirMuddy Sammydavies, voil, you're so right!
But most of the time I'm too fuckin' lazy,
I just take my old no-name acoustic guitar
and get the juice of the mothafucka!
I'm always five string since 1995

HardKnoxDurtySox what do you guys know about these new tex/mex teles theyre making that have the strat pickup in the middle? are these a good buy or should i just fork it over for a "real" american made one?
10-10-03 10:59 AM
sammy davis jr. I buy American guitars for the most part, BUT, the new mexican Tele's and Strats are a great value. Some are set up very well, but you need to play 'em to be sure. I just bought a '52 reissue Strat for 400.00, which is by far the cheapest guitar I own, but it is my current favorite- the thing plays like a dream. To answer your question, if you like the guitar and the way it sounds, go for it. The middle strat pickup definitely has more character than a tele neck pickup. My tele is always on the bridge pickup.

telecaster Some of those Mexican Fenders are pretty bad and don't hold their value

I have a Japanese Strat and it is awesome

The American Strat is the best and will actually increase in value

scully Anyone ever play one of those Telecasters (I think the 72 fat version) with the himbuckers -- seems a weird idea to me, I like the two different pickups on the 'normal' tele. The neck pickup is cool for a funky sound. I've also seen a few teles with an f hole - what's that do to the sound?

I have the 72 with the humbucker(s)and f hole

The sweetest sound you will ever hear. Rings like a bell clean and a nice dirty sound

scully Thanks for the info, I've been think about looking for one, I love my 'standard' telecaster, but I'd like another one!

Mathijs Main thing is, whether they're mexican or American: there good ones and bad ones. Out of ten new strats I generally think only 2 or 3 are really good, 2 or 3 are average and the rest is bad. Just go to a guitar store for a day, and play as many guitars as you can. In geneal though, the lighter a strat is the better it is. Sunburst guitars in general have better pieces of wood, and mexicans really have shitty hardware. For example, the mexican Tele misses the brass plate underneatch the lead pick-up, so it hardly sounds like a Tele. You need to get a good Seymour Duncan or Lindy Fralin to get the right sound. In my opinion the best strats are the 1957 Vintage Reissue (especially the ones from 2001 and on) and the Relic series, allthough I find the latter one really too expensive for what you get. And, I always prefer second hand guitars, as they are played in and seem to have become more alive.

My way of getting the Keith/Taylor sound: an 1971 ampeg VT-22 with RCA 6L6 power tubes, fed through a Koch loadbox. Cranck it to 8, plug in my Les Paul with seymour Duncan alnico pro II pick ups, and were back on the 1972 tour! With my 1963 Tele were right back to the 1978 tour!

palacerevolution Agree with Mathijs. On the Amps. I would definetly stay away from those damn Mesa Boogies that Keith and Ronnie were advocating for a long time. Glad they went back to big stock fenders. I even preferred the Ampegs from '72.

scully I saw a Dan Armstong lucite guitar down Denmark Street a couple of weeks ago. It was abot 900 so it's a bit beyond my price range, but would it be any good anyway, I thought they didn't stay in tune?
10-13-03 08:49 AM
Mathijs 900 punds for an Armstrong Lucite probably means it is a current re-issue, as original 1969-1970 Lucites are in the 2500 euro price range, especially if the much wanted modern drive humbucker is present.

I have an original 1970 Lucite Armstrong with Rock Treble single coil and Modern Drive humbucker. The Modern Drive is too loud for my taste, it blows away my Les Paul. I only use the Lucite for slide playing in open E. I don't have tuning problems sinceI use 0.12's. I did string it with 0.10's, and indeed the guitar was very hard to keep in tune, especially on stage. The sound is unique: it's raw, loud and there's is endless sustain, much more than a Les Paul. It's hard to describe the sound. It isn't very rich in harmonics and it is isn't very versitile, it's just straight ahead rock. For me it's perfect for playing slide on track like You Got Me Rocking, Let it Bleed and Happy.

scully Thanks for that, I hadn't realised the Dan Armstrong had been re-issued, I didn't look too closely at the one I saw, as I don't have a spare 900.

Does sound like an interesting guitar though.

HardKnoxDurtySox Im torn between buying a really nice tele or les paul or getting a computer for school....soo many hard choices in life..

joey, when does rog's new show start? or has it already?
10-14-03 03:13 AM
Yann.69 What about acoustic guitars?
Gibson Hummingbird, J200, Martin?
What gives you this perfect Stones sound?
10-14-03 04:34 AM
Mathijs There's only one acoustic to buy if you want the stones sound: a 1961 to 1964 Gibson Hummingbird. In 1965 the bracing was changed, and it sounds entirely different. The current issue of the Hummingbird doesn''t come close to the original. Be aware: the original hummingbird has the much hated tune-o-matic bridge, which mutes the sound -but that's what Keith liked!
