Topic: Mick's Singing Style Return to archive
September 28th, 2005 07:01 PM
jcdesq I have often read that Mick derived his "signature" singing style from the great Fats Domino, piano player extrodinare and Crescent City denizen. More specifically, Mick learned from Fats how, or more appropriately how not, to pronounce lyrics.

This is just another reason why the city of New Orleans is the most important musical city in the world. It is the cradle of blues, jazz, gospel, and, yes, rock and roll. Give generously.

I feel terribly about sending Fats all that hate mail over the years, and that failed attempt at kidnapping his son...well that was just wrong.

wicked! you're wicked!

I thought his singing style was one part Slim Harpo and one part Bob Dylan

too bad he forgot how to sing that way

when Sir Mick unnunciates every sylable of every word now I cringe

Mick should leave the over unnunciating of lyrics to Alfie soundtracks and stick to warbling songs all juiced up and sloppy when he's got the Stones behind him

I wish he could s-t-r-e-c-t-c-h every vowel! I think Mick hit his stride vocally with Let it Bleed and remained untouchably great through Tattoo You, after that I think he slid for a while and found a new style for Voodoo Lounge and is once again great!

Am I the only one who likes Anybody Seen My Baby?

stonedinaustralia to my ears i put micks "over ennunciating" - which became really noticeable to me on She's The Boss - esp. "hard woman to please" is an attempt by him to cop aaron neville's style and feel

whew! I'll sleep better tonight!

I actually think I'm a Stones whore who eventually persuades myself that anything they put out is brilliant. Some kind of mental defect, I imagine.

Haven't quite got there with Back To Zero, however

doo doo doo Dude I'm a big fan of Mick's barking/growling style so prevelent on the 73 & 75 tours (see also Black & Blue, specifically Hand of Fate).

i even liked his out of breath panting from the '81 tour better than this overenunciating shit he's taken up since.

I HATE IT when he rushes a song in concert. I also think he doesn't overannunciate at all on certain live tunes. listen to the version of Sway from Saturday night's Columbus show or any of the Heartbreaker performances. Then go back and listen to the original album versions.

On The Sticky Fingers versiom he sings:

"It's just that deeeeemon life has gottt chou in its sway"

and on Goat's Head:

Haaaarrrrghtbreakers with yo forty fours I wanna tear your world apart!!"

I LOVE THAT!

ListenToTheLion Mick's singing on A Bigger Bang is a highlight. One of his best achievements.

"I hate to be denied
How you hurt my pride
I feel pushed aside
But laugh, laugh, laugh
I nearly died"

I LOVE THAT!

Other overlooked Mick Classics

Little Indian Girl
Tops
Blinded By Rainbows
Til The Next Time We Say Goodbye
Down In The Hole
I Go Wild
Brand New Car

oh, fuck I love them all, I guess I'm just some kind of goddamn Jaggerfag!

shit!

What happened to me?

I DO draw the line on Primitive Cool, however.

Micks vocals on the new album are super. He sounds so into it and more authentically Mick than in a long time. He got that toungue and cheek Some Girls humor going with it on this album and it fits. I am still really impressed with what a great vocal job he did on A Bigger Bang. You just can't ask for anything more.

Now remember boys and girls:

1.Not all albums can be sang the same way, in the same tone, or even with the same miking, and recording techniques. It all depends on what the album calls for.

2. Also sisnging too much like it's 1974 or even 78 would sound silly and forced. He knows just how to work it with all the flavor but still knows just how to cut it and just when to hold back and so he doesn't sound trying. He also knows at just what degree may sound a bit like he's over-doing it.

The Wick Ian: I agree with you that trying to recreate a sound is fairly pathetic, but at the same time, this enunciation bender he has recently been on is excruciating. "You're awful bright, you're awful smart" I must admit it's full of shite. It's just agonizing listening to crap like that. His best vocals have always been the rough ones where the lyrics were impossible to decipher. I mean it took me ages to figure out what the fuck he was on about on Bitch, Gimme Shelter, and Start Me Up. Now, he makes everything so clear and leaves nothing to the imagination. Some of the songs on ABB would have been so much better if he would have warbled his way through. His new vocal coach is the same vocal coach that Boner has, so I suppose that says it all. It also doesn't help having Matt Boom Boom Clifford around.
