 Debut: Alexandra and Theodora Richards
London Fashion Week, the decorative topping on Britain's £10 billion clothing and textiles industry, opened with style and taste yesterday.
And taking their first steps on the London catwalk were the two teenage daughters of Keith Richards, the Rolling Stones guitarist, who arrived from New York.
Alexandra, 18, and Theodora Richards, 19, are joining a cast of young global models who will wear the designs of some of the best British designers.
Meanwhile, the actress Sadie Frost and her partner, Jemima French, created the music and the mayhem of a Sixties gig for their FrostFrench show in the West End nightclub, Titanic.
Celebrities and Hollywood stars crammed into the basement club for the duo's spring/summer showing.
Space was so tight that Jude Law, the ex-husband of Frost, and his girlfriend, the actress, Sienna Miller, had to stand at the bar, looking over the shoulders of Kate Moss, Meg Mathews, Tracey Emin, Matthew Williamson and the rap-fashion tycoon Damon Dash with his 12-year-old son, Boogie, perched on his knee.
"Jude wanted to come," Sadie said backstage.
"He told me 'I want to support you. I love your clothes. So does Sienna'. Despite what the tabloids say, we're all good friends."
The collection was a funky-glam mix of Forties, Fifties, Sixties and Biba inspiration, just like the rock 'n' rolling Sixties - only more see-through.
The theme was big-knickers and bras in shiny satins, or brief printed bikinis, worn under transparent floral chiffon dresses, which were puff-sleeved and sashed at the waist.
"It's a bit like you're in Ibiza and you've been at the beach all day and you just throw this little something over your bikini to go out partying," said Frost.
The party mood continued at the show by the Jamaican-born designer Jessica Ogden inspired by a visit to the weekly Wednesday street party in Kingston Town's Passa Passa street.
To a background of old-time reggae, she showed traditional, flounced, peasant blouses and full, tiered skirts in brilliant red and white gingham, zig-zag knit, harlequin patchwork and carnival florals.
Her models were made-up and coiffed with red and white wool hair-pieces in the manner of the African photographer Seydou Kieta, who documented the style and dress of the women of Mali in the 1950s.
London Fashion Week continues today with an intriguing mix of old and new. Established labels, Paul Smith, John Rocha and Nicole Farhi are showing their spring/summer 2005 collections alongside the up-and-coming New Generation talents, Jonathan Saunders, Giles Deacon and Bora Aksu.
