I have sat here and read so many put downs of these two new songs. It started to drive me mad. But then I thought, no, this isnt right. If you sit down and really think about this can you honestly say that these two new songs are not better than anything else on the radio today?
They are stones songs through and through and we should do all we can to make sure that they sell well and that the poor misguided souls who have never opened their minds to the Stones are shown into the light by US! |

I disagree.
Just because it's new Stones' material doesn't mean it's automatically "good" or "worthwhile". Shit is shit, regardless of who it is. Now, I'm not saying that the new songs are shit - both are growing well on me, especailly Rough Justice. My point is, regardless of who it is - my favourite band or otherwise - if it's not quality material, no automatic label of greatness will be slapped on by this guy. |

Yeah I agree with you and the last part of my post was just a bit of a joke really. Not to be taken too seriously I hope. I do however, seriously believe that these two songs are a lot better than anything I am hearing on the radio at the moment. |

they are. Well, Rough justice certainly is.
Agree with lazy though. Lot of hysteria over new Stones material by people (not you, personally) who in their excitement cant accept dissenting opinion.
Problem is they've left it so long to release new material that a lot of folks fall into two extremes
1) the fans who are so desperate to hear new material that they'll piss their pants with excitement regardless of what the Stones had released
2) those who, after waiting such a long time, expect them to have come up with something earth-shatteringly brilliant on a par with "Gimme shelter" and for whom anything less shows evidence that they're washed up.
I find myself sympathetic to both arguments. I'm excited at the band releasing new material, although if I'm honest I've been impressed with only one of the 3 songs I've heard do far (the other two are OK. I cant really judge ONNYA as I havent heard the finished version, but while I liked the tune in the 2 performances I've heard of it, I thought some of the lyrics were embarrassingly awful). Streets of Love could be a much better song with a few lines re-written.
I admit to falling into the usual pre-album hype though by saying that I'm optimistic the album will be very good.

I don't listen to the radio - but for those reasons, I truly believe that you (and Gazza) are correct. |

Although the new stuff really does seem OK at best (although you never know with these things because they often grow on you over time), I agree that it is better than anything on radio and I would choose them over listening to anything else. There is a tendency to start slagging things off just because they are new. Obviously some people have genuine opinions about the quality of new stuff, but others should just step back and think before jumping on the bandwagon. I was listening to the new songs on Forty Licks again last night and although most people seem to hate them, I think that Don't Stop and Keys are superb songs, and Stealing My Heart and Losing My Touch could have been great great songs. Don't Stop is Jagger getting back to writing guitar driven songs like Brown Sugar. If they had been recorded in 1971, with the amazing lyrics that mainly Jagger came up with, we would all be raving about them as classics. I admit they sound over produced, but still great songs. I'm not saying anyone who has posted on this thread is anything less than genuine, but the bandwagon people should step back and listen for a moment. |

I agree with all that is being said here. I also dont think that you have to listen to the radio to know what type of music is around and doing well today. I dont listen to the radio either but i know that when i do it will be full of U2 and coldplay. And I think the stones new stuff is better than their new stuff |

yeah. To be honest I've almost zero interest in what passes for pop/rock in 2005 anyway.
As Morrissey put it "the music they constantly play/says nothing to me about my life"..
Most of what's recent that I listen to now is rootsy Americana stuff like Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle etc - which doesnt get played on the radio anyway
hearing a rootsy Stones rocker on it would be a breath of fresh air from 62 year old lungs!

Don't you love it how people talk about Coldplay as if Mr. Paltrow is a musical genius? U2, Radiohead, and whatever the hell else people want to throw up are a load of pure shite. U2 somehow even managed to make BB King look bad with When Love Comes to Town. Besides, in some way or another, they all follow in the footsteps of the Stones. Angel of Harlem: I wonder where U2 got the idea to play some r'n'b? Everyone takes the Stones for granted. They should realize that before the Stones, rock music didn't even exist in its current form. I guess I'm preaching to the choir here though. |

I am also symathetic to both agrguments that Gazza mentioned before.
And I probably fall into the first category of pissing my pants...not completely though I must admit RJ my favourite but I actually like SOL better than ONNYA mainly because I think ONNYA gets a little repetative towards the end and could use a bridge to break it up...
Also to the other category, because it has been 8 years since the last album does not mean they are going to come out with something earth shattering,,,,I mean they have not been working on the album for 8 years...anyone who thinks that this album will be hearld as a classic is misguided in my opinion. I wish they could but Im realistic about that.
I also dont listen much to todays Coldplay, U2 or system of the down crap
The only band to excite me lately is the White Stripes who I rate highly. |
