Since waiting for the new Stones album has been endless, I'm looking for some good funk/soul/jazz alternatives.
So far, I'm targeting Sly & Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock (more jazz than funk, but still...), Wayne Shorter, Ben Harper, EW & Fire...
Help me out here, give me some others that I'm missing, that should be on my list. Ohio Players? Prince? Curtis Mayfield? Rick James? (I'm Rick James, bitch!) |

Monkey Woman |
Otis Redding, James Brown, Ray Charles, the Isley Brothers (check the recent Toronto Rocks DVD), Aretha Franklin... A good collection to begin with is the Rolling Stones Artist's Choice CD:

Well, I dig Prince and Parliment/Funkadelic. You can't go wrong with Sly either. Ike & Tina is some hot shit too. Have you hit on Robert Randolph & The Family Band yet?
As far as soul goes, how about Marvin Gaye? If you want to get laid, Marvin will help you. I can't even begin to tell you how much pussy I got, but shouldn't have, thanks to Marvin Gaye.
When I'm in a jazz mood, I usually go for John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, The Duke, and the Count, Billie Holliday, and of course, Miles Davis.
I'm not sure what Tom Waits is classified as...but check out Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, or Franks Wild Years. |

What Prince do you recommend outside of the obvious 1999/Purple Rain umbrella?

Mikey...
I like the new record...Musicology. I am also partial to Sign 'O The Times and the first New Power Generation album...the one with Seven on it.
But it is my opinion that the best Prince album of all for a rump shakin' good time is the Black Album. It went unreleased for years and was only available as a bootleg. Finally, a couple years ago it got an official release. I think it may be his best album....it's my fave. |

Off the top of my head, Mikey...you must include some ladies into your line-up!
Start off with
...Aretha Franklin "The First Lady of Soul"
...Etta James "The Matriarch of The Blues"
...Nina Simone "The High Priestess of Soul"
...Josephine Baker "African American Jazz"
There are several more I could add...this should get you off to a good start. |

A few funk-jazz recommendations (more on the jazz side-no vocals):
Herbie Hancock "Empyrean Isles" or "Head Hunters"
Lee Morgan "The Sidewinder"
Freddie Hubbard "Straight Life"
Miles Davis "On The Corner"
Grant Green "Blue Breakbeats"

Yeah Baby!
If you want some downhome funk fried up with delta water, try The Wild Tchoupotoulis (sp?) includes some members of both of above groups...Professor longhair, early Leon Russell, C.J. Chenier, Buckwheat Zydeco, Dr. John, almost anything with a Mississippi-river backbeat! |
