I am sure most people here are listening to talk radio tuned to the representative of the political affiliation of their choice while frothing at the mouth. But if there is anyone here listening to and enjoying actual music right now, let us know what it is! (I like CSPAN myself, preferring to digest raw content rather than swallowing the conveniently snipped soundbytes delivered by big media but I don't have cable anymore).
This is the first year since about 1994 that brand new official releases have dominated my ears rather than the steady stream of same show different day boots that used to fly in.
Right now:
Peeping Tom self titled debut. Latest Mike Patton project with various collaborators including an unlikely duet with Norah Jones. Probably the first CD in 14 years (since Faith No More's "Angel Dust") that I could listen to over and over again without tiring of it. Not so sure I would call it the CD of the year over Mudhoney, just that every song is unique and I still love the guy's voice, its just that he finally put out something easily accessible, to my ears at least.
Unfortunately the past few days I have had to listen to the new Cheap Trick CD a few times a day too. Its amazing what these guys can accomplish when they aren't chasing the illusive third comeback hit. Lots of great stuff on this disc.
Sadly, as much I would like to keep listening to the brilliant new Mudhoney CD "Under A Billion Suns," there just aren't enough hours in the day.
Okay, your turn! |

There's so much good music out right now... I have to say, it's a conversation that is always in progress and can't be contained to one thread. 2006 will go down as a great year for rock and roll albums. I only feel sorry for anyone that thinks rock is dead.
I agree, I've heard some of the new Cheap Trick and it's pretty dang tootin' good. I was very surprised. |

Dirty Boulevard
by Lou Reed
Pedro lives out of the Wilshire Hotel
He looks out a window without glass
The walls are made of cardboard, newspapers on his feet
His father beats him 'cause he's too tired to beg
He's got 9 brothers and sisters, they're brought up on their knees
It's hard to run when a coat hanger beats you on the thighs
Pedro dreams of being older and killing the old man
but that's a slim chance he's going to the boulevard
He's going to end up, on the dirty boulevard
He's going out, to the dirty boulevard
He's going down, to the dirty boulevard
This room cost 2,000 dollars a month, you can believe it man it's true
Somewhere a landlord's laughing till he wets his pants
No one here dreams of being a doctor or a lawyer or anything
they dream of dealing on the dirty boulevard
Give me your hungry, your tired your poor I'll piss on 'em
That's what the Statue of Bigotry says
Your poor huddled masses, let's club 'em to death
and get it over with and just dump 'em on the boulevard
Get 'em out, on the dirty boulevard.
Going out, to the dirty boulevard.
They're going down, on the dirty boulevard.
Going out
Outside it's a bright night, there's an opera at Lincoln Center
Movie stars arrive by limousine
The klieg lights shoot up over the skyline of Manhattan
But the lights are out on the mean streets
A small kid stands by the Lincoln Tunnel
He's selling plastic roses for a buck
The traffic's backed up to 39th street
The TV Whores are calling the cops out for a Suck
And back at the Wilshire, Pedro sits there dreaming
He's found a book on magic in a garbage can
He looks at the pictures and stares at the cracked ceiling
"At the count of 3" he says, "I hope I can disappear"
And fly fly away, from this dirty boulevard
I want to fly, from dirty boulevard
I want to fly, from dirty boulevard
I want to fly, fly, fly, fly, from dirty boulevard
I want to fly away
I want to fly
Fly, fly away
I want to fly
Fly, fly away
Fly, fly, fly
Fly, fly away
Fly away

Its called "Rockford." Has quite a few rockers including the leadoff single "Perfect Stranger." It has a ballad but nothing really sappy like "The Flame" or "Voices." |

I've been listening to 78s. Not bootlegs of the '78 tour, but 78 rpm records.
A few months ago, Miss Youngblood and I were looking at an online auction of rare blues 78s, and I remarked that if I had the money to burn that was something I could see myself collecting. Just something about them as objects that I found desireable. She agreed.
In the ensuing days we both grew to become Stanley Brothers fanatics, as I mentioned to Martha in the Dylan thread. That culminated in us going to see Ralph Stanley in concert. I met him afterward and shook his hand. (I put that experience right up there with slapping five with Muddy Waters in 1980 and shaking Keith Richards' hand in 1999.)
Last Saturday morning I was knocking about, looking for something to do in my hometown while the family was away. I wandered into a community yard sale, picked a garage sale at random, walked in, spied a stack of 78s and started looking through them. Within a minute I found "The Fields Have Turned Brown", one of my favorite Stanley Brothers songs, b/w "The Old Home", on Columbia. Trying to keep my voice from giving away my excitement, I asked how much the 78s were. "A quarter each." I kept looking. Soon I found ANOTHER Stanley Brothers record!! But it was another copy of the same record. I bought both, and two more random choices to make a dollar's worth. I didn't have anything to listen to them on, but was just thrilled and amazed at my luck. A real Howard Carter(Stanley)-like find!
I went next door and in the driveway was a 70s-vintage stereo with a turntable that played 78s. "How much?" Six dollars.
When I got it home I dropped the needle on one of the other records I'd purchased and discovered that it too was an old hillbilly record, called "The Drunken Driver". After about 2 seconds I got back in my car, drove back to the garage, and bought 50 more 78s. I've been listening to them ever since. There was some crap in the stack, to be sure, but I also got Moon Mullican's "I'll Sail My Ship Alone" on King, "Dog House" by Hawkswhaw Hawkins, and some other real gems.
The odd detail in all of this was that I had TWO copies of the same Stanley Brothers record. I checked eBay and saw it was only worth a few bucks. Then, the following Monday, this was posted on the internet -
"The resource center of the Ralph Stanley Museum & Traditional Mountain Music Center in Clintwood, Virginia seeks your help in adding to their archives. A state-of-the-art facility honoring bluegrass and mountain music legend Dr. Ralph Stanley, the Center also seeks to preserve and promote the music of their region -- southwestern Virginia. Your assistance is requested in the donation of Stanley-related memorabilia such as old record albums, 45 and 78 RPM recordings, photos, songbooks, folios, newspaper and magazine articles, recordings of live concerts and radio shows, video tapes of television appearances, personal appearances, and related items for the archives of the Ralph Stanley Museum & Traditional Mountain Music Center."

So THAT was why I found two copies of the same record - so I can keep one and donate the other to Ralph's museum! We're driving down this July for my birthday. While we're there we'll go a bit further down the same road and visit the Carter Family Museum.
Besides these 78s, I recently listened to a Henry Thomas record, and last night we played some Syd-era Pink Floyd.
