Hey, I'm not a huge RS fan, I just dig on some of their records, so I don't really know all that much about them for now, apart from the music and members etc.
So, I'm writing a thesis/paper for school regarding album covers, and part of it is to analyze every RS record from 1964-1971.
Most of the copies I'm using are the remastered ones that came out a few years ago, and from what I understand the one for TSMR is different than the original version.
The original had some 3D thing going on? Well, my copy doesn't have that, but what it does have is this other colour effect, over the whole cover, including the "frame" with the blue and the smoke or whatever... I'm not sure the technical term of this but it's something very basic, you have an image, and you move it around under light, so you get these "waves" of rainbow-colour-like light.
So my question is, is this just an effect that had been added to the CD version, or could you see it on the original album as well (probably not, but I need to be 100% sure, or at least 99%)...
And please also inform me a bit about the 3D thing.
thanks in advance and tell me to clarify myself if i'm being confusing. |

I have a copy of the original LP cover from 1967. It is a hologram-type picture glued to the album cover and as you move it around you see different things in the picture. The gimmick was to find all four of the Beatles faces hidden in the picture since they "welcomed the Rolling Stones" on their 1967 LP cover, SGT. Pepper. This rainbow effect must be something new on the CD as to have something special since they don't do the 3-D effect on the Jewel case...this was very special to look at years ago in the right (wrong) frame of mind...trust me! |

Thanks for the quick reply...
But so, the hologram/3D image... Can you see details on it just like any other picture if you don't move it around? For example, can you clearly see that there's a tricolor stripe thingy on Keith's hat? Or a little camel with stuff on the back in the bottom right corner? |

The camel is quite blurry and you can see the stripes on Keith's hat. I dug it out of my collection and I'm looking at it right now. The Stones are looking at each other and then looking straight ahead depending how you hold it; except for Mick who's in the middle only looking straight ahead. The original 3-D picture isn't very clear around the perimeter. It clears up as you get towards the middle of the scene. George is underneath Charlie's right arm, John is down under Bill in the flowers, Paul is under Keith by his feet and Ringo is to the right of Bill. Paul & Ringo are harder to find. Boy, I paid $9.99 for this LP used around 1986 when I was in High School. I wasn't even born when this came out. Lots of fond memories listening to this with my friends...& yes, we saw what happened! |

After looking at that link, I just realized... Are we talking about the same version? 'Cause I'm referring to the British version, are there any differences? I see that one says London, which was the American label... Again, are there any differences? |

Okay another question about ANOTHER cover, this is less complicated though, Let It Bleed.
That vinyl on the cover, the red sticker on it, that says the Rolling Stones etc. with a group picture... That wasn't the actual sticker for the vinyls, was it? |

if you want some bonus points, the guy lying face down in the cake on the back cover is Brian
btw, what kind of degree can I earn from writing a thesis on album covers? |

it's in art & visual communication. |

You lucky bastard....how could you have this perl?!?!? Is it still possible to find one?
Since we are talking about the best invention regarding music media, over there in US is it easy to buy old vinyls for low prices?
