You know, here is something very interesting. I hope the Stones record this album in SA-CD format as well as the standard PCM style of recording for cd's. It would be great to get a hybrid containing the two encoding techniques.
Why?= We'll I have purchased an SA-CD player and bought some of the Stones remasters on SA-CD compatable format that are also hybrids and the sound is great. The highs are so concise and clear. The bass and lows are so warm and lifelike.
It creates a great "Live" sense to the music. Everything seems to have a wider spread in the stereo range as well. Gives a truely balanced sound.
The Stones should release their new album on SACD/PCM hybrids as the remasters are now issued. Anyone know of the odds or chances on that?
SA-CD is the way to go right now for
the best quality audio. It even surpasses DVD-Audio. It would only make sense the Stones/Virgin release their next studio work on SA-CD as well right?

Agreed. A new release on SACD hybrid would be great.

That would be great to boost SACD however I'm seeing the players reduced in price (good) but wonder if this format has any lifespan?.Only Sony and Philips make/made the players and my point is whether or not SACD is going to be around for much longer....No one else seems to be trying to push the equipment or sound advantages to the listener..... |

Time will tell. But Sony and Phillips are two very important players in this field. Other big companies supporting the SACD format are Sharp for the constructors and Emi, Virgin and Universal for music publishers.
Of course, SACD is not the only format competing for the succession to the good old CD. But it seems the DVD-Audio is a little behind, in terms of the number and diversity of titles available (about 800, but more 1,000 for SACD). The number of SACD and hybrid SACD titles available is growing (more than 1,000 now), from classics like the Stones and Bob Dylan to recent releases like Beck's Sea Change. Not to mention classical music, jazz, pop, world, soundtracks, etc.
But it's essentially re-releases of discs that were already successful on CD. Maybe the turning point will be when artists begin to release new material directly on SACD... |

Thanks everyone,
for the props on the subject material of my post. I feel good. Never got those before.
Anyway. SA-CD is here to stay. Sound is as good as it can get right now and their are too many big spenders either relasing things in Sa-CD or in on the technology.
It will eventually pull plenty ahead of DVD-A (audio) in terms of sound. It still has an edge right now. I can attest to the stuff. It is truely a difference. And it seems so lifelike. The music just seems to have great presence. The sound is balanced and the highs are very high and the lows are so warm.
You can hear every little nuisance. Even Keith just touching the strings without really playing them you can hear at times. Cymbals seem more splashy. Lot's of detail.
And that is on a remaster. Imagine a whole new studio project!

Have SACD players gotten any cheaper yet?
I think I believe all the hype, but goddamn, they're expensive.

Sure, They are really resonable now. It isn't like it was three years ago. You can get a Sony SA-CD player for right around $150.00-$170.00.
That's a good price for a good name like Sony and the SA-CD sound difference.

LOL, Vinyl is good if it wasn't fragile or so noisey and didn't deteriote over time they would be my prime choice for quality life like sound. Oh well. And yeah.....I hear ya about an album. I am on pins and needles here.

Ian, if you take care of your vinyl, it should last much longer than your cd's probably will/do. I have read recently that the first cd's created in the early 80's are already deteriorating. The layer that the music/data is recorded on degrades with exposure to air. Also, the sound is only scratchy if the record gets dirty. I listen to vinyl frequently and it can sound better than cd. At times I forget what format I am listening too.
The SACD players are quite affordable these days too. The format does seem to be losing much steam though... I would suggest to all out there, if you haven't bought the hybrid Stones SACD's, you better get on it. I checked four local Best Buy's yesterday and only 1 had any real quantity in stock. I bought the ones I had yet purchased. In fact, I cleaned out all the Stones Hybrid SACD's all four of them had in stock. They are that good! In europe, they are no longer releasing the Dylan hybrid SACD's. They have been replaced with remastered redbook cd's. I checked for the Dylan SACD's too. Only 1 had any real quantity. If you haven't bought these yet, I would get them ASAP. They will be phased out for the cheaper redbook reissues. Then, the only place to get them will be on eBay at premium prices. |
