Born this day in 1911.

Everytime I'm walkin', down the streets, some pretty mama start breakin' down with me
Stop breakin' down, yes stop breakin' down
The stuff I got'll bust your brains out, baby, hoo hoo, it'll make you lose your mind.
I can't walk the streets now to consolate my mind,
some no-good woman she starts breakin' down
Stop breakin' down, please stop breakin' down
The stuff I got it gon' bust your brains out, baby, hoo hoo, it'll make you lose your mind
Now, you Saturday night women's, you love to ape and clown,
you won't do nothin' but tear a good man's reputation down
Stop breakin' down, please stop breakin' down
The stuff I got'll bust your brains out, baby, hoo hoo, it'll make you lose your mind
Now, I give my baby, now, the ninety-nine degree,
she jumped up and throwed a pistol down on me
Stop breakin' down, please stop breakin' down
Stuff I got'll bust your brains out, baby, hoo hoo, it'll make you lose your mind
I can't start walkin' down the streets, but some pretty mama don't start breakin' down with me
Stop breakin' down, yeah stop breakin' down
The stuff I got'll bust your brains out, baby, hoo hoo, it'll make you lose your mind

Love in Vain
Spoken: "I wanna go with our next one myself."
And I followed her to the station
with a suitcase in my hand
And I followed her to the station
with a suitcase in my hand
Well, it's hard to tell, it's hard to tell
when all your love's in vain
All my love's in vain
When the train rolled up to the station
I looked her in the eye
When the train rolled up to the station
and I looked her in the eye
Well, I was lonesome, I felt so lonesome
and I could not help but cry
All my love's in vain
When the train, it left the station
with two lights on behind
When the train, it left the station
with two lights on behind
Well, the blue light was my blues
and the red light was my mind
All my love's in vain
Ou hou ou ou ou
hoo, Willie Mae
Oh oh oh oh oh hey
hoo, Willie Mae
Ou ou ou ou ou ou hee vee oh woe All my love's in vain |

Yes - and the only thing he loved more than the Blues was the sweet ladies...proved to be the death of him far too soon. |

Actually Cream "introduced" me, with "Crossroads", which was a song I really dug in fifth grade. Same with Skip James, with their version of "I'm So Glad". Of course those were both sorta heavy-metal versions of the rough-hewn original gems - I wasn't ready to jump into the DEEP water quite yet. But it definitely planted a seed that's still bearing fruit.
The next year I saw the Stones do "Love In Vain" on the Ed Sullivan show. Closer to the real thing, but why'd they give songwriting credit to Woody Payne? Who the hell IS Woody Payne? Anyway, I didn't know that was a Robert Johnson song for awhile.
Miss Youngblood and I were in Ithaca this weekend and we heard 3 Robert Johnson songs in a row on the radio in honor of his birthday. As great as he sounds when you put the CD on, when he comes out of the radio unexpectedly it sounds like the voice o'gawd. |
