An in-ear monitor? An earplug? A hearing aid? |

Yes it's an in-ear monitor. He's been using them for awhile now.

I remember reading about them at the beginning of the tour, their those in-ear monitors so he can hear what he sounds like when singing, make sure he's not off key and all. Many singers wear them. |

the Dead were the first major band to wear them...starting in 1992....everyone who wears them insist they give much better and more indidualized sound for them than do monitors, i.e. Mick doesn't have to complain about how loud Keith is turned up and vice versa!

it actually serves both purposes...it blocks out the "high end sound" and gives mick just the part of the mix he needs to know where he is at.....typically he doesnt have horns or bass in his monitor.
Most musicians (at least those who value hearing) wear some sort of ear plugs when playing. |

These could have helped out years ago with Pete Townshend!! Actually though, he said the studio headphones did more damage than playing live. |
