i m looking for the story of this groovy tune, which is, IMO, one of the highlights of the us licks tour.....
i m definitely in love with Charlie's drumming on this, with those great riffs, and , i got to admit it, by Chuck keyboard...
i haven t heard the studio version, but I know you can help me folks....

This one was one of the early points of contention for the boys in the 80s, wasn't it? Keith and Ronnie did it basically as an instrumental (there's a nice funky instrumental jam of it with Mick just occasionally yelling "Oh yeah!" in the background), and, according to Keith, Mick "turned it into fucking Don Giovanni".
I don't know the whole story, but I know "Dance (Pt. 1)" appeared on Emotional Rescue and is probably the best track on an otherwise tired (and occasionally horrid) album. It's a cool number, very funktastic, an excellent bassline.
"If I Was A Dancer (Dance Pt. 2)" appeared on Sucking In The Seventies. It ain't as good, if only because it's the real Don Giovanni version, as it were, with Mick's inane pop lyrics dragging it down as opposed to the somewhat ad-libbed stuff in Dance Pt. 1 (Mick opens "Dance (Pt. 1) with a kind of crazy drawl, going "Hey, what am I doin' standin' here on the corner of West 8th Street and 6th Avenue... awww, skip it...")
It's worth trying to find an MP3 of the studio version. Heck, you might as well buy Emotional Rescue and see what the fuss is all about, although with CD prices so damn high in the EU you might just be better off downloading a few tracks.

Absolutely true. I think it's a great song. The live version wasn't that tight but nevertheless a good decision they played it. With ER the decline of TGRRBITW began. |
