Topic: Warning about Fake EBay site Return to archive
2nd April 2006 10:17 AM
StickyFishFingers I nearly got scammed by some bastard who has set up a fake EBay site. I am so dumb for letting the pricks who set it up con me. I got sent an email supposedly from EBay stating that there was a security problem with my account and I had to re-supply credit card info which i stupidly sent. I was initially suspicious when I read the email & so I read all the fine print, looking for spelling mistakes, & any other obvious signs of fraud. Everything looked legitimate. I got an email from the real EBay today saying that my EBay account had been compromised, someone was trying to sell something using my account - lucky for me they didn't use my credit card to buy anything as my wife rang a hotline number for our bank a few minutes ago. I've cancelled my card & confirmed that no transactions have been made with it. PHEW. The point of all this is just to warn people here in case any of you were trying to sell Stones tickets on EBay. Feel like an absolute idiot.....

StickyFishFingers I feel I should add that this all came about coz I was trying to sell on EBay the shitty tickets (at less than face value) that I got thru those wankers - ETix...... When is the good Karma gonna start happening?

Scottfree "I've learned that life is one crushing defeat after another until you just wish Flanders was dead."

Great Quote..... Sorry about your misfortune, good luck in futue endeavors....

gorda Never buy stuff over the internet. It's actually more fun to go to the store and buy stuff in person anyways.

stonesmachine Both Ebay and Paypal say right when you sign up that they will NEVER ask for your account information after you sign up. Sorry for your inconvenience, lesson learned I hope.
I do get these emails from fake paypal on occaision, just delete them

StickyFishFingers yep lesson learned for sure. I've closed my EBay account for good now. dumbest thing i've ever done.

cheers

Prodigal Son Happened to me too. But it got erased off of my account and everything went back to normal. Dumbest thing about it was it was in my spam folder and I thought it was there by accident. Now I never click on any links in spam mail. It could be a scam thing like the eBay one. The perpetrator was trying to buy a car with my account but why would anyone do that if they get no money? They must do it cause they're sick bastards getting their jollies from conning people out of money and yet getting nothing in return fiscally.

StickyFishFingers Yeah it was all really wierd - the person who got into my account was trying to sell a mobile phone using my account. I got an email from someone asking me about the phone too. very bizarre - none of it makes sense. oh well lesson learned. Now i've got to try and sell these bloody spare tickets that i got thru ETix somewhere else.

Break The Spell I've never been scammed credit card wise, but when I first joined I got ripped off on a few products. One of the worst was on a Who concert DVD from 1982, it was advertised as a full concert with full songs, yet many of the songs faded out just seconds into them!! Others had the same complaint, yet by the time it was brought to ebay's attention, the seller was long gone. For the most part, its been nothing but great experiences, but now and then a few jackasses can ruin for everyone.

WhenTheWhipComesDown I receive those fake eBay notices once in a while. Ebay states to
send them at [email protected]. Also does anyone ever get those
messages from some creep in Nigeria, or somewhere in Africa,
wanting to use your account for a deposit? One goes and another
one takes its place. I spam them. Also get lottery notices which
are spammed, and other sleazeballs wanting all kind of creepy
stuff. It seems like reporting to the senders server helps once in
a while. There are so many of these slugs, that it is hard for the
servers to keep up with.

StickyFishFingers Yeah after i received an email from the real EBay I forwarded them the dodgy email from the fake EBay & they gave me the spoofEBay address. I wish i had've known about that beforehand. Working your way around the EBay front page trying to find contact details isn't as straightforward as it should be.

I get those Nigerian emails regularly also. Good idea re spamming them - another good one is to subscribe them for religious pamphlets like the Watch Tower.
