Topic: Who will the Stones agree to be interviewed by in Australia? Return to archive
24th March 2006 04:56 AM
StickyFishFingers Christ I hope Richard Wilkins doesn't interview Mick again on this tour. That interview he did with Jagger on Channel 9's Today show on the Licks tour was awful.

I'm hoping Andrew Denton gets a chance this time around to interview Mick or Keith, or any of them for that matter.
24th March 2006 05:26 AM
Jumping Jack Are any of the interviewers from 73 who said Keef wouldn't make 70 still alive to do the interview?
24th March 2006 05:47 AM
exile there is an old rumour that Keith was getting a cab in perth in the mid 70's (totally out of it on junk) and the cabbie woke him when they arrived at the airport.

keith asked how much he owed the cabbie, who replied "5" (meaning five dollars). keith gave him $500.

obviously was having trouble with the exchange rate.
dont know if its true.

Gazza! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ALL HAIL NORMAN GUNSTON.
taught Ali G everything he knows.
Keeping in mind this was the 70's most celebs had no idea he was a comedian posing as reporter.

Norman Gunston is one of my all time favourites.

When he said to Linda McCartney "Its funny, mrs. Mccartney you dont look very japanese to me"

or when he asked Mick jagger if he uses heavy Drugs. Mick said "No". Noramn said "Yeah they strech out your pockets"

24th March 2006 07:32 AM
Gazza "do you sleep in this bed with Mr Keith Richards....?"

(thing is, how the fuck could anyone with hair like that be taken seriously as a reporter....!)

exile Yeah i know..youd be surprised.
the Gunston character and his show were initially devised as a parody of an (unintentionally bad) late-night Sydney TV variety show of the early 1970s hosted by expatriate American club entertainer Tommy Leonetti.

gained a huge national audience and the series became the the biggest Australian TV comedy program of its day

the best ones were with Sally Sruthers. Warren Beatty.Mick Jagger, Charlton Heston, and Muhammad Ali. Perhaps Norman's most well known interview was with Keith Moon at Charlton stadium in 1976. Moon famously ended his brief encounter with Norman by tipping Vodka over his head.

"Ya Greek Poofter. PISS OFF"
24th March 2006 10:04 AM
StickyFishFingers Yep that interview with Moonie is legendary. Was Sally Struthers the woman who was in hysterics with Gunston? I'm having flashbacks to the 70's. Norman Gunston made a comeback I think in the 80's but they weren't as funny as the 70's episodes.

brilliant!!

corgi37 Gunston is seen alot in the Rewind vid. He had unprecedented access to the band in 78. Jagger loved him. Looking under his bed for drugs. Asking Charlie about his Irish WOlfhounds. And, backstage straight as Jagger & Keef come off. He goes "Its Mr. Mick Jagger! Its Mick Jagger! I loved him ever since he was in the Beatles!

Gunston's version of Miss You was simply brilliant.

More trivia? ok.

Gunston, aka, Gary McDonald is a very well actor. His wife, Dianne Craig, replaced Maryanne Faithfull in Ned Kelly! Gunston is his most infamous creation. Really, you guys dont know the effect he had on this country. And, really, i aint kidding, many people overseas didnt know he was kidding around. He was brave as fuck standing in Georgia, dressed in Klan gear, asking black people if they are related to Jimmy Carter. Mohammed Ali nearly killed him! Struthers i/v was just brilliant. But, gotta say, McCartney was in on the joke. As was Mick. No doubt, relatives of Mick, he being1/2 AUssie, pointed the Gunston character out to Mick.

Prior to Gunston, McDonald was in a ground-breaking show called "Aunty Jack" Very subversive. Sort of Monty Python on crack. Aunty Jack, played by McDonald's life long friend, Graham Bond, had a catch phrase "I'll rip your bloody arms off!".

In the 80's, McDonald starred in Australia's, and really the worlds, finest comedy "Mother and son". This was genius tv making. I mean it, so good. Hilarious and deep all at once. Makes Seinfeld or Friends look like the Gong Show.

StickyFishFingers Yep totally agree with ur comments there Corgi re Mother & Son. Great show. The scene in the funeral episode where Maggie dropped all those lemons into the tomb cracked me up.
When i was a kid i was scared shitless of Aunty Jack. We had some family friends one of whom was named Jack & I assumed in my naivety that Aunty Jack lived at their house, I used to shit myself everytime we went to visit them.

Who was the interview with when Gunston played the harmonica - was it Frank Zappa?

Man. I have seen that one hundred times and Im dead sure Keith Moon says "Ya Greek Poofter. PISS OFF" as he walks off. I have the interview on dvd, I will check it.

very funny Keith Moon gets out of a limo "blind drunk" with two girls in tow.

well you maybe right exile it's been a long time since i last saw it...but somehow it doesn't seem to gel

but if you can have another look at it let me know

dredging the memeory banks - i wonder if moonie doesn't make(the rather cliched) "convict" reference

corgi37 Gunston did indeed jam with Zappa. I'll tell you another who is a rip off of Gunston. That Allan Partridge character.

I wonder if the 78 interviews really did have something to do with McDonalds wife being in Ned Kelly? I'd dare say Jagger and he would have met in 69 while filming was on. When the Stones toured in 73, Aunty Jack was huge here. Jagger probably went "holy fuck, its Dianne's hubby"!

BTW, she was an absolute stunner.
25th March 2006 08:24 PM
StickyFishFingers I never knew until yesterday that she was she McDonald's wife. Thanks for the info.
25th March 2006 10:05 PM
corgi37 I bet Nui Te Koha gets a interview.

hwe said something anyway right after he poured an entire bottle of vodka over Normans Head. hilarious. will watch today.
25th March 2006 11:18 PM
Daethgod i wouldnt be surprised if no-one gets an interview
depends what day they hit Oz.
This could just be a in and out visit.

Maybe arrive Mon, Tues gig in Syd, Wed travel, Thurs gig in Melb, Fri off to NZ.
I bet they do a press conference, prob in Sydney on the Monday night.

26th March 2006 09:25 PM
StickyFishFingers you're probably right there Daeth, but if anyone does get a chance to interview any ofthem i hope it's Denton - or Kerry O'Brien. He's a Stones fan for sure, i remember seeing him at the Enmore.
27th March 2006 05:43 AM
corgi37 If anything, there might be just a general call out like the last 2 tours. I dont know why they would bother. The tour, all of a massive 2 shows, is more or less sold out. What are they gonna talk about? The weather?
