Hey, most incredible Stones thing happened to me on Saturday. I was minding my babies, going nuts in the process i might add, when i had a sudden urge to change the cable channel.
Lucky i did!
I missed the 1st 10 seconds or so, but i saw a clip i have never seen before. It was the Stones, it was easily 1969, doing Gimme Shelter. Now, as i said, i missed the very start, but the ending showed the audience applauding, and it looked very much like an Ed Sullivan audience.
So, was it Sullivan?
Some clues for anyone who know:
Jagger & Keith had white shirts.
The camera work was woeful. Not 1 full band shot. It was either Mick, Charlie, Keith - or Mick T & Charlie. Bill got a bout 5 seconds total screen time.
The miming was pathetic.
The song was edited so Mary Clayton's part was cut out.
But, i was stunned. Apart from the bad performance and camera work, the song sounded great. Obviously, it was 100% mimed (Charlie didnt even pretend to do anything remotely resembling what he did on record) but i must say, i had not heard Charlie's drums sound as clear. Usually, on this song, and many, many others i could name, you virtually cant hear Charlie's kick drum. Or, his toms are mixed/recorded badly.
But, and i am assuming, i guess when they re-cut the song for the show, they may have fiddled with his mix.
Anyway, is it Sullivan? And, why havent i seen this before? I mean, i've seen Paint it black & lets spend...& satisfaction heaps. |
