Topic: Worst Stones Show you have seen Return to archive

kahoosier We always discuss the best show, the best solo, etc. Here is a question for all of you old timers. What is the worst Rolling Stones show you have ever been to and why? I am going to post this on another board and compare, LOL and I wonder how many of us will share the same event.

Hands down without a doubt, for me, would be Cleveland 1978. Crowds control was non-existant, the rampant rush at the turnstiles when the gate opened seperated my freind and I. By pure luck an hour or two later we found each other by accident in the festival seating. Drugs made the whole event tolerable, as the maxed out stadium was full of people in la la land.

We suffered through some pre-show wierdness with someone riding a motorcycle on a high wire. It may be drugs, but I remeber Peter Tosh's opening act not being well received, and Kansas only a bit better. Then the wait. The Stones took the stage and we were all better, or so we thought.
To be blunt, they sucked. Anyone who says the guitars can't be heard today should have been there! The loudest instrument, when the mike was not failing, was the craok that Mick called a voice, and any hopes of deciphering lyrics was in vain. The only song I remember where there was any clarity to seperation of the instruments came on Far Away Eyes, which at the time I really did notapprecaite as a song. The whole show lasted about 8o minutes, maybe less. Kieth acted like he couldn't have cared less that day.

But you know what, I have seen them so many times since, and hope to see them so many times more! It is only with 25 years of hindsight that I can admit that that was not a great show, oh yeah, and the boot that proves my memorey is not bad! BUT THEY ARE THE STONES!

glencar The worst show musically was the Joint show in Vegas from the last tour. They just didn't have it. The worst show as far as the crowd was Philly FUC '02. The crowds in Philly are ruder than anywhere else.

Poplar
wasn't an "awful" show, but not all that good.
Columbus Ohio - right after the opening two nights in Chicago for Bridges to Babylon. It was pretty clear that the boys were still looking for their legs. Worse yet, the section my ticket was in was pitiful. NOT ONE person standing up, and - of course - people bitching at me to sit down. Some guy (not OUR Some Guy) freaked when took a puff off my very discrete one hitter. for the first 30 minutes, i was thinking; "why did i drive 8 hours to see this crap?"

then - a turning point ---

i said "fuck y'all" to the bitches in my section, and just walked right down to the field, right past security to the B-stage. Camped out RIGHT beside Keith's amps, cause everyone with those tickets just decided not to show up, i guess. Needless to say - it provided a HUGE thrill when they came out there. From that point on, i had my Stones show routine down. buy a cheap ticket just before the show, then just find some place somewhere awesome inside. it worked for every show since then... in fact, after columbus, i never saw a stones show from more than about 6 rows away. and no - i never paid big $ to do it. I always thought that was a very "stonesy" way to go about it anyway. very much in the original spirit of the band.

despite the monumental learning experience, the show was not spectacular. however - i'd like to thank the college kids near the stadium that let me party and crash at their place after the show. good folks, and very generous.

ps - i love having y'all here to tell stories like this.
have a great weekend everyone.

John Wood If there was a show worst than SARS stock I hope I never hear about it. The Stones sound for that show was not only my worst Stones show but my worst cocert of all time hands down!!!

Steel Wheels The Philly show was great. The Stones played for me that night. I fed them engery and love, and they responded with enthusiasm and inspired playing.

The worst show they ever did? One could say Altamont...or one of those cancelled Chinese gigs.

FPM C10 Mine was my second Stones concert - JFK Stadium, Philly, '78. Similar to the '78 story posted above, but hey - it was still a Stones show and I'm not sorry I went. They did Sweet Little 16 and Satisfaction, and during Love In Vain a jet flew over the stadium and momentarily drowned the band out. They didn't do an encore (they rarely did before '89).

I think there are no bad Stones shows, just bad seats.

Did they? My memories of the show I saw (the first one of the tour, in Philly) are pretty fuzzy. What did they do as an encore?

glencar I had to look up the second show as I wasn't there(SFM) but I knew the first show was Satisfaction. And they did encores on the '75 tour which I didn't get to attend.

kahoosier Steel Wheels...I was there for the two delayed Hong Kong shows and the cancelled Shanghai and Beijing shows...LOL...yeah I guess they make the 78 show I am whining about great in comaprison. But shopping in Shanghai was great as always, Hong Kong is beautiful, and I can say that Beijing has never failed to impress me.

nankerphelge I loved Philly '02 -- thought it was one of the best!

I thought the DC Bridges show was weak.
It was cold.
The B stage was good -- Lil' Queenie & Let It Bleed -- but the rest of the show just never seemed to get going.

But I did have maracas!
And my daughter's Esmarelda tambourine!
The tequila/chiba combo brought out the percussionist in me!

Two positive things about that show, "out of control," no one knew what the hell it was since the album hadn't been released, but it rocked. Also Sister Morphine was amazing.....

Nasty Habits Columbia, Missouri, 1994.

The sound was awful, the crowd was listless, and because it was on University of Missouri property the Stones weren't allowed to serve beer. This made for a crowd that, coupled with its Missouri mid-American uptightiness, lacked a certain willingness to let go. This seemed to feed back to the Stones, who responded with what seemed to be a pretty low-energy show. Jagger even commented at one point, "You seem kind of quiet tonight. . . " but could not get the crowd into it. The only thing the audience really wanted to do was sing along, and the whole concert had this annoying campfire feel about it that distressed my rock 'n' roll sensibilities.

FUC '02 was fucking brilliant, and the people around me were either private or princes. Plus I got to dance on the steps with a really hot chick during the voodoo portions of Can't You Hear Me Knockin'. GREAT show.

glencar La Storm est morte.

I guess I'm in the extreme minority on FUC '02 but maybe it was where I was located. It's like real estate - location, location, location!
