Topic: Funny story about Tom Waits and "You Got Me Rocking" Return to archive

Mel Belli Forgot to share this story, so here goes: I saw John Eddie open up for Southside Johnny in D.C. right after Christmas. John, a great singer-songwriter and all-around great guy, was hanging at the bar after show. We chatted for a while and he mentioned he saw the Stones at the L.A. Wiltern Theater show in '03.

During "You Got Me Rocking," John was right beside Tom Waits, who was ... taking notes! He said how odd it seemed at first, but then, when you think about the song's lyrics, they are very Waits-esque. It never in a million years would have occurred to me, but I think it's true. I now have a new appreciation of the song.

pdog Very cool story...
I wish Tom toured more, that's one note he could take from The Stones...
Didn't he write I Don't Wanna Grow Up? Ramones did it on their last album...

He did indeed. It's on the same album -- "Bone Machine" -- that has his great duet with Keith, "That Feel."

maumau funny story indeed
and odd as it may seem if you think about the sound od ygmr and not only the lyrics you may found some connections to things like goin' out west and this kind of waits songs with heavy drums driving the rhythm

Saint Sway whats really crazy is that the song started out as a Keith song done as a bloozy - boogie on the piano.... very Waits-esque

Love the 10-plus-minutes version that's on Voodoo Brew/Stew. The tempo is slower, funkier. And Keith's ad-libs, as always, involve anal sex.
