I just learned that my girlfriend Diane was at this show, but she can't remember the exact year or date...was it July 26, 1972? Please help!
Oh, I would wish to have been at the entire taping of the Rock and Roll Circus..if i am to pick just one thing.
Otherwise, I wish I could have gone to at least one show per every tour since it all began. |

just finished greenfield's book (STP - Journey through America with the Rolling Stones), and he goes into this episode in detail...
Chip Monck had a few other things he wanted to do, but the venue said no (an elephant was to give Mick a rose with his trunk, or something). anyway, MSG kept saying no, and chip had to have a decoy set of pies, which were confiscated by the venue, and he had another set under the stage by the amps, gear, etc...
apparantly when they got Charlie with the pies (and I think it was Stu that got him), the two pies hung off his ears, reminiscent of what princess lea's 'do would look like some five years later...
classic stuff, and it would have been a gas to have been there. |

Actually, they were throwing birthday cake around. |

first chip hired an elephant, trained to walk up steps. "At the end of the set, (the elephant) will come out on stage, bump jagger, then bow and present him with a long stemmed rose. Everyone will sing happy birthday. the elephant will pat Mick on the ass and leave..."
idea shot down by venue...
then Chip thinks, "let's drop chickens" but Rudge asks, "what happes if they come down and claw people's eyes out?" "yeah" chip concedes, "what hapens if the kids start tearing them apart and eating them live, geek-style? What we'll do," chip continues, "is dip their little toes in a vat of warm paraffin. that way they will have little booties on and they wont be able to claw people."
idea shot down by the venue - "When the Garden hears about the chickens, they seal off the roof."
howabout amyl-nitrate? "we'll lay them all over the floor and hire a caterpiller (tractor) to drive over them and crush 'em and imagine! there'll be 20,000 people rushing at the... no, huh?"
idea shot down by Chip
so chip buys 154 cream pies "when the garden discovers this, they freak and make him remove them... the garden confiscates the ones they are supposed to find while there is a whole other load hidden in boxes behind the amps.."
Bianca comes out after the encore with a cake for Mick. then, "the boxes come open, Jagger gets one whopp on the arm, throws one at Charlie, who ducks. Stevie (Wonder)'s horn player cracks an amy and flings one pie that wipes out Stevie's three chick singers with one creamy swoop...
"The stage is covered with a quarter-inch of cream; it's everywhere, oozing and sticking. Charlie sits behind the drum kit, unscathed. He does the final roll on Happy Birthday, kicks in the final beat, hits the cymbal and is about to rise when Stu, who is so covered with pie he looks like Frosty the Snowman, plants one large pie on either side of Charlie's head. Whop! Whop! they hang there for a second, like pastry ear muffs, then slide slowly off, leaving great mounds of fluffy white stuff behind." |

OH, I dunno. Just the whole idea of being in Ireland (land of my ancestors) on the grounds of a beautiful Castle (fascinating story of George IV and Lady Conyngham) near the River Boyne. It's just SO romantic. Throw in the Stones and I'm swooning!!
