Having bought this only recently in the summer, I am only now begining to enjoy the album.
Therefore it is a little bastard of a grower and rocks especially for the 80s.
Gritty guitars! Which was needed!
I love She Was Hot's verse but the refrain / chorus is SO 80s it actually makes me crack up, anyhow - enjoyable!
I wanna hold you is okay, sound rhthym guitar
Too Much Blood makes me smile - Jagger's cockney / New York tinged rapping doesn't quite cut it! ahaha! But it is an excellent concept of a song "'bierying' the bones!" LOL
Pretty Beat Up I find just a good solid rocker.
Obviously this was not their most creative or inspired album / period, but it DOES just about cut it with me.
Good job probrably they didn't take this LP on the road, but only because of band feuds - the album would have been easily tourable IMO.
Got any opinions ladies and gents...

Yep -- it grows on you.
I like Pain of Love, Too Tough & Must Be Hell too.
When it first came out I thought it was more of the same.
But over time I still listen to it more than Tattoo You and certainly more than Dirty Work.

how do you rate it guys compare to Rescue?? |

It pretty much rips the piss out of Emotional Rescue.
Bar the obvious exeptions, She's So Cold, Emotional Rescue the song and Let Me Go, but only when it's live obviously!
1983!!!!!!!!!!!

Always thought ER was an attempt to make another Some Girls, but it never quite ripened.
I like Let Me Go and Where the Boys Go and Summer Romance
But they aren't quite as snappy as When the Whip Comes Down or Respectable or Lies
I love Far Away Eyes, but Indian Girl?
Miss You was overplayed but it is a great song.
Emotional Rescue was way too much for me -- I still laugh when I hear it -- just like the first time I heard it!!

Funny thing about the album is its obvious contrast to Tattoo You. Check the b-sides (if you still have the vinyls...) of both them and you can see they are using the reverse method; Tattoo You's flip side is full of slow songs; Undercover full of rockers! In fact, Undercover (totally taken) is maybe their most rocking album ever; only "Feel On Baby" is a slow one. They didn't even included "Think I'm Going Mad" there.
Anyway, I remember that the album felt a bit disappointment at the time of its release, but I think it's better than it is usually rated. Much better than its follower.

What an awesome piece of work! The Stones reached a second peak in the late 70s/early 80s & this was the end. Even though TY might have more fans, I myself like UC better. It's grittier & more interesting overall. |

better. I think Emotional rescue is unique for the Stones in that they left off better songs than what they released (you could say the same for "dirty work" but an album with 5-6 songs with keith on lead vocals was never a realistic option). They recorded shitloads of songs for "Some girls" and "ER" - some 80 songs in all. How they couldnt better the ten they ended up with is still a mystery. The songs they left off "ER" and released on "Tattoo you" were better than practically all of the songs on Emotional Rescure.
I think ER suffers because its in the middle of two very strong albums but to be honest its never been an album I cared for. I love "Where the boys go" however (one of my top 10 Stones songs), and theres a few reasonably good ones, but "send it to me" and "Indian girl" are way below Stones standard and in the title track they put out easily the worst single of their career. To this day, its one of the few Stones songs that literally make me cringe. Mick sounds as endearing as a child molester on that "I will be your knight in shining armour.." nonsense.
"Undercover" isn't anything special really but theres a few belters on it. The title track was a great return to form, and "Too much blood" is great fun. theres a few run-of-the-mill rockers on side two but its not at all bad...and unlike most people, I LOVE "Feel on baby"....

Any thoughts on the "Undercover" video? Keith seemed like a natural with a gun in his hand. |

The title track on Undercover is the best song they have done since the early '70s. My most lasting impression of the album is how versatile a drummer Charlie is. He handles hard rockers, reggae, disco, slow stuff, just about anything. Whether by chance or design, I think this album showcases his versatility better than just about any other album. He ain't just a rock drummer, Ronnie.

I think its a real good album over-all. Undecover....is underated! Undercover is one of their best singles and it is really high tech sounding. The rest is also real good.
I even like "Pretty beat up". alot of Undercover was experimental and it shows. Quite an entertaining album.

Undercover is very cohesive. Does anybody know the origin of the material? Did they intentionally made all those songs for this album, or are there some leftovers of the past a'la Tattoo You?

Always liked Undercover, not a classic but a really good upbeat rocker of an album. Too much blood, however even though its quite funny is not what I want to hear on a Stones album. |

B-side of Undercover were not all rockers. I used to have Think I'm Going Mad as the b-side of She Was Hot. It was a 45 picture disc shaped like a Stones tongue and had a girl hugging a burning candle. |
