LAKE JACKSON, Texas — A woman indicted on negligent homicide charges for allegedly giving her husband a fatal sherry enema received more than $240,000 from his life insurance policy following his death, a newspaper reported Thursday.

Tammy Warner, 42, was indicted last week by a Brazoria County grand jury. She is accused of causing the May death of her 58-year-old husband, Michael Warner, by giving him a sherry enema that caused his blood alcohol level to rise to .47 percent.

"That's extremely high," Lake Jackson Police Detective Lt. Robert Turner told The Brazosport Facts. "You're either going to be in the hospital or the funeral home with that much alcohol."

Turner said Michael Warner was an alcoholic who could not swallow liquor because of ulcers and acid reflux.

It isn't clear if Michael Warner willingly received the enema, Turner said. Tammy Warner has not made a statement to police, he said.

"He was told that he could not drink alcohol or that he would die, according to the people that we interviewed," Turner said. "We are going to prove that she gave him the sherry and that she knew that he wasn't supposed to have any and that it could be detrimental to his health, and that she gave it to him anyway."

Tammy Warner is free on $30,000 bond. Her attorney Jill Rekoff did not immediately return a phone message left Thursday by The Associated Press.
