Pete: Email that clears me

ROCKER Pete Townshend last night said he had email proof he DID contact internet watchdogs to complain about paedophile websites.
The Internet Watch Foundation initially denied they had been in contact with the under-fire Who guitarist � quizzed by cops on child porn allegations.
But they have now admitted to his lawyers that he DID email them three times last year. Townshend says he even got a reply.
And sources close to Townshend said this was the first step to the guitar legend clearing his name.
Pete, 57, said: �You may recall that a couple of weeks ago, representatives of the Internet Watch Foundation told the press and news stations they had never heard from me.
�I, of course, know I did communicate with them several times last year and they have now supplied to us copies of my emails to them � one in August, the rest November.
�My lawyers have written to the IWF founder Mark Stephens, who was adamant they had never heard from me, asking for an explanation.�
Police raided Townshend�s home in Chiswick, South West London, and took computers this month.
But it is believed officers have found no evidence he looked at child filth � other than on the occasions he admitted viewing sites to research a book and campaign against porn.
One source close to Townshend said last night: �We think this shows Pete�s name will be cleared.
�He insists he�s told the truth all along and his intentions were good, if not a little naive. This proves that.
�It is embarrassing for the IWF. They said they knew nothing about him � but now he has the proof.�
Mark Stephens attacked Townshend at the time of the police raid, saying: �It is wrong-headed, misguided and illegal to look at or download paedophiliac material. If you do, you�re likely to go to jail.�
IWF chief executive Peter Robbins refused to comment last night

JB-- Based upon what has been presented so far, I think you are correct. However, there may be more info to which we are not yet privy.
For those of you who want Pete to sue the tabloids, that idea will probably go nowhere. If the tort laws in England are at all as in America, a public figure like Pete would have a much more onerous burden of proof than a private citizen would in order to prevail at trial. One of the prices of fame.

I knew Pete was innocent..never doubted it for a minute.
Thanks for keeping the news coming in Gazza/everyone.
Obviously, the recent developments aren't being given the
same attention as when the "news" broke.
The media is so focused on rumor, gossip, character
defamation, and lying as a way to get ratings..it really is
appalling...not to mention morally reprehensible.
Also, we are being trained as consumers to jump to conclusions
without hearing the whole story or all of the evidence...
and while that can be tempting I work on not falling into
that trap/pit. We don't know how to listen very well.
I have been burned by the gossip and lies of other people
(on a small scale but it affected my job and personal life
in ways that have forever scarred me.....
I lost my job over it, in fact).
It is one of the worst things in the world to be accused
of something you didn't do..and given no recourse
to prove your innocence...it is a nightmare.
I've been there.

Me too! I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was like my very own little soap opera. And then I had their arses dragged into arbitration, which was an absolute hoot!

Sorry I'm late to this. I think the best thing that will come of this whole thing will be complete rage within Pete. Townshend's always made his best music when he's extremely pissed off or emotional about something (Just look at The Who By Numbers or Empty Glass). I think this whole thing will make Pete angry again, and he'll get back with Roge (hopefully) and make some great motherfucking music again. I couldn't stand another Psychoderelict - let's hope it's AT LEAST another All the Best Cowboys or Empty Glass. |
