Rare guitar stolen from kids' charity
16jan06
THE theft of a rare electric guitar signed by the Rolling Stones could cost a charity for children suffering from cancer $13,000.
The Fender brand guitar, which raised that amount for the Challenge charity at an auction last month, has been stolen before it could be collected by the winning bidder.
Thieves on Sunday smashed a rear window of the charity's West Melbourne headquarters, on the corner of King and Stanley streets, to get into the building some time after 1am (AEDT).
It was the charity's second break-in in two months, after thieves stole computer equipment in mid-December.
"This second robbery has hit the charity much harder," Challenge chief executive David Rogers said tonight.
"The uncollected guitar raised $13,000 at auction (and) we are unsure if we will have to return the money."
Challenge provides support for children living with cancer.
Mr Rogers said police had advised Challenge to closely watch the internet auction site eBay in case the thieves try to sell off the rare collectable guitar.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
