1978 US Tour Overview
The Stones opened 1977 by deciding to play a series of
five club dates at Toronto’s El Mocambo Tavern in March 1977, which were to be
recorded for the upcoming live album. Plans were thrown into disarray when
rehearsal time was reduced by Keith arriving in Canada a few days late and made
even worse when a couple of days later he and Anita Pallenberg were busted in
their hotel suite by the Mounties who found enough heroin to charge him not
only with possession but trafficking, a charge which saw him facing several
years in jail and which would almost certainly spell the end of the Stones as a
band. Released on bail, he re-joined the
band for rehearsals for the shows which were now reduced in number to just a
couple of dates. Somehow amidst all the chaos, the band managed to rise to the
occasion and delivered two superb performances – the four covers included on
‘Love You Live’ are the highlights of the entire double album and the surviving
partial soundboard of one of those shows (almost certainly the second night –
rumour has it, the tapes from the first show were unusable) shows the band at
their ragged best. On fan forums over the years, these shows seem to be at the
top of fans’ Wishlist for a vault release. Hopefully someday the Stones
organisation will see sense and put them out officially.
With Keith’s day in court looming ominously on the horizon
for 1978, the band spent two months either side of Christmas in Paris working
on over 40 new songs which would be whittled down to the ten that would be
released on ‘Some Girls’ in June 1978 as well as stockpiling others for future
use. Their finest work in years, it would become their biggest selling studio
album. The band promoted it with a relatively short summer tour around the US
(Canada was unsurprisingly left off the schedule) which took in 25 shows, all
but one of them one nighters,
in what seemed a random mix of theatres, arenas and stadiums. It made for a
strange schedule with the sole New York date being a show at the Palladium in
front of 3,500 whereas a few weeks later they played to 60,000 in the small
university town of Boulder, Colorado.
The shows saw a return to a stripped-down pure rock ‘n’
roll sound which saw Mick added on guitar for several songs as the Stones ran
through a high-octane set which was usually around 18-19 songs, clocking in around
85-90 minutes and which on most nights featured up to eight songs from the new
album, most of them played back-to-back around the middle of the concert. Other than four performances of ‘Satisfaction’,
the shows featured no Stones songs that pre-dated 1968 and the previous three
studio albums were ignored entirely save for ‘Starfucker’ from Goat’s Head
Soup. Two Chuck Berry songs were
performed regularly, with a raucous performance of ‘Hound Dog’ being added in
Memphis (naturally) and Lexington. The remainder of the set consisted of half a
dozen numbers from the ‘Golden Era’ of 1968-72 plus an occasional ‘Street
Fighting Man’ as an encore. Audience recordings vary from awful to very good,
but fortunately the tour is well represented in the form of the 2011 archive
release of the ‘Some Girls Live in Texas’ DVD and CD from the show in Fort
Worth as well as a few astounding King Biscuit Flower Hour FM broadcasts showcasing
excerpts from the concerts in Memphis, Lexington, Detroit and Houston. Additionally, there is a superb soundboard
from the Capitol Theatre show in Passaic near the start of the tour which is
complete apart from the last couple of minutes of the final song (legend has
it, that the taper was ‘caught in the act’ but managed to pull his c-90
cassette out of the mixing desk just in time before hotfooting it out of the
theatre).
Number of shows – 25
Number of shows in circulation – 25 (most of them complete)
Recommended shows – other than the officially released
show from Fort Worth (18th July), any bootleg release which includes
the KBFH (King Biscuit Flower Hour) FM performances mentioned above (“Gorgeous Girls
Redux” and “Handsome Girls” are two of the best known
titles) are essential, as is the soundboard from Passaic (14th June).
Of the audience recordings, the best one
is Oakland (26th July).
Personnel - Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts,
Ronnie Wood and Bill Wyman with Ian Stewart on piano and Ian McLagan on keyboards.
Bill
Graham was the tour promoter and manager.
