NRDC Presents the Rolling Stones In a FREE Concert to Turn Up the Heat on Global Warming
FANS CAN REGISTER NOW FOR A CHANCE TO WIN FREE TICKETS

Los Angeles, CA - (December 23, 2002) - NRDC (the Natural Resources Defense Council) announced today that the Rolling Stones will perform a special free concert to raise awareness about global warming on February 6, 2003 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, CA.

NRDC and the Stones are staging this landmark event to turn up the heat on global warming, and spotlight opportunities that exist right now to start fixing the problem.

"The Rolling Stones' commitment will help build unprecedented support for NRDC efforts to fight global warming," said NRDC president John H. Adams. "The Rolling Stones deserve a standing ovation for putting the environment on center stage."

Fans can enter a sweepstakes to win two free tickets by completing the entry form at www.nrdcstonesconcert.org or by mailing a 3x5 index card with the entrant's name, address, telephone number and date of birth to NRDC Stones Concert, P.O. Box 15099, North Hollywood, CA 91615-5099. No donation is required to enter or win tickets.

Online entries will be accepted from 9am PST on December 23, 2002, until 11:59pm PST on January 6, 2003. Mail-in entries must be postmarked between December 23, 2002, and January 6, 2003, and must be received by January 10, 2003. Only U.S. residents (excluding residents of Florida, Rhode Island and Puerto Rico) who are at least 18 years of age may enter. Limit 1 entry per person, per e-mail address and per household. Void where prohibited by law.

Winners will be selected at random and announced the week of January 13, 2003. Each winner will be notified directly via email or post. Each winner and each guest must pick up a ticket and a wristband at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles on Feb 4 (6am - 9pm), Feb 5 (6am - 3pm), or Feb 6 (6am - 12pm). Photo ID will be required. Each winner's guest may not attend the concert without the winner. Tickets not picked up by 12pm on February 6 will be forfeited. All winners' names and cities will be posted on the concert's official website, www.nrdcstonesconcert.org. For more details, see the Official Rules for the sweepstakes at www.nrdcstonesconcert.org.

The goal of this event is to encourage the public to learn more about global warming. Visit http://rollingstones.nrdc.org/globalwarming/ for information and to find out what you can do.

A private donor will be absorbing all expenses for this important evening. NRDC will also have a limited number of tickets as part of their fund raising efforts.

NRDC is America's leading force for the environment, making the air cleaner, our waters safer, and protecting the Earth's wild places since 1970. Backed by more than half a million members, NRDC lawyers, scientists and other specialists fight for tough safeguards, and make sure they're enforced. Global warming is the toughest environmental challenge yet, threatening the health of people, wildlife and economies around the world.

The Rolling Stones are completing the North American stretch of their critically acclaimed and sold out Licks World Tour and will launch the international leg starting in Australia on February 18 with shows to follow in Asia and Europe.

PS: if this is already posted here, someone clue me so i can delete. thanks.

Martha I appreciate getting the details on this. Thanks for that Jaxx. I only heard it a few minutes ago on ET..but without the details..just a teaser blurb in between all the other madness. Hopefully, a lot of Rocks Off members will be winning those tickets!

I hadn't thought of it in that angle! It is going to be their first free concert after Altamont, right... Of course there's no comparison, certainly, but it does cause some strange feelings, the "first after.." thing.

Well, it is going to be beautiful! Open only to US residents, such a shame..

Fiji Joe This is great!...Those people who so concerned about global warming will be so busy hugging trees that I should be able to slide right in the arena...

Free concert fantastic...attaching yourself to any political cause...not so good...The Stones have done really well throughout the years avoiding this type of thing

Besides...it never got over 30 degrees here today, global warming my ass...Fiji had to put a shirt on

Ah.

Arright, then. That's probably what's happinin'.

Guess the Stones don't want their HBO fans who're seein' them on Saturday seeing two shows for the price of one... it might just blow their Sopranos-innundated minds.

Rolling Stones Announces Free-for-All

by Josh Grossberg

Note to Rolling Stones fans: It appears you can always get what you want.

The world's greatest (if creakiest) rock and roll band has announced plans to put on a free concert--their first since their infamous 1969 Altamont gig which resulted in the tragic death of a concertgoer at the hands of a Hell's Angel.

Unlike that show, the new love-in will be on the more conventional side (i.e. free love's out, overpriced arena sushi is in).

This time around, the AARP-eligible Mick Jagger Keith Richards, Ron Wood and Charlie Watts will get their final licks in at the 20,000-seat Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 6. The free concert, which aims to raise awareness of global warming, will be squeezed in between tour stops February 4 in San Jose, California, and February 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

According to a press release issued by their publicist, the dino-rockers have teamed with non-partisan environmental lobby group, Natural Resources Defense Council, to spread the word about the damage greenhouse gases, caused by human activity, have done to the ozone layer.

"The Rolling Stones' commitment will help build unprecedented support for NRDC efforts to fight global warming," said council president John H. Adams in the statement. "The Rolling Stones deserve a standing ovation for putting the environment on center stage."

The concert is being produced by Hollywood producer and democrat Steve Bing, who earlier this year was at the center of a paternity spat with model-actress Elizabeth Hurley to determine whether he was the father of her baby boy (he was).

Mick and the boys have been reluctant to put on a charity ball for their fellow Boomers since the fiasco at California's Altamont speedway near San Francisco 33 years ago.

That raucous affair was plagued by organizational problems from the start.

For one, promoters hired local Hell's Angels for security. The bikers had little appreciation for the 300,000-plus patchouli-soaked hippies that trekked from all around the country to see the Stones.

As a result, tensions boiled over at Altamont. Several Hell's Angels began beating fans with pool sticks, and one concertgoer, Meredith Hunter, was stabbed to death as the band watched helplessly, a scene vividly depicted in the documentary Gimme Shelter.

Following the incident, the band opted for participating in more low-key fundraisers, including the 1973 benefit to help Nicaraguan Earthquake victims. They also performed two court-mandated gigs in Toronto in 1979 to raise money for the blind as part of a judge's sentence slapped on guitarist Richards for heroin posession.

Unlike Altamont, the February event promises to be good, clean and safe fun like the rest of the Stone's sold-out Licks Tour. The fortieth-anniversary trek got off to a rollicking start last September and continues to be the top-grossing live act of the year, raking in more than $120 million, even as the music legends have opted to play smaller venues such as clubs and ballrooms in addition to massive arenas.

For those fans who can't afford to shell out hundreds of dollars to see the Stones and want to help spread the word about global warming, tickets are just a click away.

Netizens can log on to the Website nrdcstonesconcert.org by January 6 and apply for two free tickets. A lottery will randomly determine 6,000 lucky winners by January 13. No donation is required. For the non-computer literate, applications will also be accepted by mail.

And for those who miss the West Coast concert, there's always HBO. The cable network plans to broadcast the Stones show from New York's Madison Square Garden live on January 18.

After that, the band plans to start things up in the far East with additional dates in Japan, Australia and other Asian countries before likely heading over to Europe.
