I'm an Englishman, born and bred in Blighty,so when I refer
to The Clash as being one of "the truly great British bands" I do so with pride, and I'm infering that they rank alongside those other truly great British bands The Beatles; The Stones; The Who;The Kinks and The Jam.
Although judging from the response to Joe's demise
The Clash seem to have had a more profound impact away from these shores...

I adore their cover of Wrong Em Boyo, too -- so Exile on Mainstreet, that!
Brand New Cadillac is another incredible cover of theirs -- it leaves the Johnny Kidd and the Pirates version at the starting gate, broken down and sad looking.
One song that's been echoing in my head these post-Strummer days has been the Card Cheat. Just an incredible Spectorian punk rush.
With a card up his sleeve what did he achieve? NOTHING!

Poor Steelie! You're really feeling left out of this outpouring of grief over Joe Strummer. That's okay, it's too late to change horses! Some Girls proved Punk never happened. Stick to that story.
Some day one of the guys in REO Speedwagon will die, and then YOU can lead the funeral parade while I grope for small talk. And when someone asks for my five favorite REO songs, I will honestly say that I didn't know there WERE five. |
