Ten Thousand Motels Bo Diddley at HAI's Annual Holiday Show
Jazz News
Dec 9,2006

The legendary Bo Diddley will perform at HAI's annual Holiday Show for 2000 disadvantaged New Yorkers on Monday, December 18th at Whitman Hall, Brooklyn College, NYC. There are few artists who truly merit "legendary" status, as does Bo Diddley, who will mark his 52nd anniversary in music in 2007. Also performing in Monday's show are Doo Woppers Nu Millennium as well as the dancers, Break!

HAI (Hospital Audiences, Inc.) harnesses the live arts for Hope And Inspiration -- hope to overcome challenges, and inspiration to persevere. Service recipients include people with mental and physical disabilities, the frail elderly, mentally retarded/developmentally disabled persons, at-risk youth, homeless single adults and families, and persons with HIV/AIDS. Since its inception in 1969, HAI has provided an aggregate audience of more than 11 million vulnerable New Yorkers with opportunities to enjoy the arts at more than 360, 000 events.

Through HAI's Community Cabaret Concert Series, underserved New Yorkers from area hospitals, homeless shelters, nursing homes, senior centers, and public schools in all five boroughs enjoy vibrant performances from high caliber artists representing the full spectrum of American music. Other performers who have appeared in this series include Anne Hampton Callaway, Lillias White and in 2007, Bill Charlap and Sandy Stewart, Karen Akers, KT Sullivan and Mark Nadler, Diva Jazz Orchestra, Baby Jane Dexter and Karen Mason.

Bo Diddley is the recipient of numerous accolades, ranging from his 1987 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, to more recent "lifetime achievement" awards presented at prestigious events such as the Rhythm & Blues Foundation's Pioneer Awards (1996), the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences' Grammy Awards (1998), and the National Association of Black-Owned Broadcasters' Communications Awards (2002). Monday's annual Holiday Show is one event in HAI's Community Cabaret Concert Series which is made possible by a consortium of private and public funders.
