Topic: The Rock n' Roll recommendations thread Return to archive Page: 1 2

mrhipfl So we all know that new good rock n' roll is rarely getting airplay on fm radio and MTV these days. The purpose of this thread is to help each other discover good modern rock music.

Rules: you gotta provide a link for some audio clips (youtube, myspace, purevolume, etc..) and you gotta mention a couple of the band's best songs.

I'll start with a garage band from Detroit called the Vibes. Best songs are Dirty love and shot me down. http://www.myspace.com/thevibeshavesoul

Another band is a southern rock band called american minor. Favorite songs are Change and Buffalo creek,
http://www.myspace.com/americanminor

hopefully this thread will be successful.

Yeah, don't get us started. I think that's partly why I'm so resistant to all the Zep hype. I love their music, but lately I've taken on the Joe Strummer "1978" attitude: NO MORE!

When all the boomer bands are dead and buried, and that generation of critics with them, maybe the industry will be able to breathe again and restore itself.

I quite like this band, as I am a moderate country rock fan. A not-so-new but very talented alt country band that began in the 90s is this one: http://www.myspace.com/richmondfontaine.

And Saint Sway wanted me to tell you guys this band rocks like hell: http://myspace.com/theizzys.

Sir Stonesalot The Chesterfield Kings. These guys have been around forever...and I think the just put out their best studio album to date. They are Stonesier than the current version of the actual Rolling Stones. The new album is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

New album-Psychadelic Sunrise. I haven't discovered any promo vids for the new songs yet, so go to their MySpace page to hear some of the new songs.

Here's "I Don't Understand" from The Mindbending Sounds Of...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nu7YPJLA0EA

I've been pushing The Deadstring Brothers here for a couple of years. Along with Drive By Truckers, the DBros are bringing the ROCK back to Country Rock. While DBT will remind you a little of Skynard or .38 Special, the Deadstrings will remind you more of The Faces doing Gram Parsons.

New Album-Silver Mountain

Here's "Meet Me Down At Heavy Load"...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9N8mdblkwo

Here's me with The Deadstring Brothers

The Len Price 3 are a kickin' little band outta the Mersey area of the UK. Think early Who and Kinks...I even hear some Stones in there...except ramped up on meth. Ridiculously catchy tunes, sing along back vocal parts, and quirkily hilarious lyrics that mostly clock in at less than 3 minutes a throw. Funny enough...no one in the band is named Len Price.

New Album: Rent-A-Crowd

Here's "Sailor's Sweetheart" from Rent-A-Crowd:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98b5klMLo_k

The Woggles have been around for ages. Their new album, "Rock n Roll Backlash" kicks it old school. Try not dancing...I don't think you can do it. You will shake some part of your body when listening to these guys.

New Album: Rock n Roll Backlash

Here's Little Steven's Underground Garage's Coolest song for 2006(the single came out in 2006 before the album) "It's Not About What You Want(It's What You Got)":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TxVZl_zbuk

The Novaks are a great band outta Nova Scotia. Very Stonesy. New album in 2008. Their self-titled debut will leave you yearning for more. You can get the album from CDBaby or Wicked Cool.

Here's one from "The Novaks" called "Goodbye Rock n Roll Band":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FspQYXaO360

I could, quite literally, do this all day. Do ya want more, or is this enough to chew on for now?

Here's a crappy video...there's better on youtube, but I've seen em all

I have to take a listen at home. No myspace or youtube available at this place of employment..

Sir Stonesalot While I'm not The DollyRots biggest fan...this is a great song and a funny as hell video. Anything that skewers and toasts American Idol is fine by me.

Sir Stonesalot Oh dear. I almost forgot The Cynics. Can't forget The Cynics. The Cyinics make me proud to hail from Pennsylvania. These guys have been around since the mid-80's and will rock your face off with killer hooks. The singer isn't blessed with the best voice in the world, but he's perfect for these songs. And they are all HUGE Stones fans.

Here's their MySpace page. They have songs and vids on their profile. While yer there, check out some of the other Get Hip bands:

Why he can't he tell us himself?

Another cool band is a cover band called the Detroit Cobras. They play all motown covers in a grage rock style.

Sir Stonesalot While not a Rock n Roll band per se...they specialize in spooky broke down acoustic blues...I'm quite partial to Rotten Belly Blues.

You can check us out...er I mean...you can check them out at the following:

"Kiss & Make Up"(caution, naughty language in the lyrics!):

"It's Midnight":

Sir Stonesalot The Brian Jonestown Massacre. They have about a zillion albums and EPs. If I had to buy only one album, I'd go with Tepid Peppermint Wonderland...a 2 disc "hits" compilation. Yes, this is the "Dig!" band. No, that wasn't a put on...they are really like that.

Here's "The Ballad of Jim Jones":

pdog Detroit Cobras cancelled again here last week. Saw them in Philly and they were a mess. Too bad. What I like of their studio work, I like alot, but they put out some clunkers too. Very inconsistent and blowing it live. Sad!

I like all the stuff SS just posted. We share a parallel musical universal taste.

I also dig blues garage bands, like Black Keys and Radio Moscow.

I love my punk rock... which is probably too much for me to get into at this time, b/c personally right now, I'm exhausted and really wiped out.
Music and god are my strength right now! I do beleive in the existence of music.

Sioux This is a great thread!!! Love the bands that Sir Stonesalot recommended.

Len Price 3---love it!
Also the Woggles and the Cynics especially.

I love the Chesterfield Kings. A friend of mine {remember
Paul Revere & the Raiders?}, Mark Lindsay has recorded and
written material with them. Greg Prevost and Andy Babiuk
are great guys....

Love all of the bands that Little Steven has exposed us to.
Let's keep this tread going...

Throwaway YES MEG!

On 89.7 in Towson, MD they played a track from Sweet Somewhere Bound, and the DJ said "thats one from Jackie Greene, a GREAT live performer, if you get the chance to see him, you must"..hope the stations around you spin JG too..
15th December 2007 12:31 PM
PartyDoll MEG We can only hope that this stint he did with Phil Lesh has increased his visibility, Throwaway!! We already know a good thing when we hear it!!!

PartyDoll MEG Oh here is some Jackie Greene...
a teaser...

With his side project..Skinny Singers:
15th December 2007 02:02 PM
Sir Stonesalot Here's the Soledad Brothers. They used to be buds with Jack & Meg(Meg was living with Johnny Walker for a while). They kick ass, and are HUGE Stones fans. You can definately hear the influence of the Glimmer Twins on these guys. There was a rumor that they had broken up, but Swank says that it isn't true. They are just taking a break before heading back to the studio in 2008.

CCM not really new but to a national thing ... Agianst Me ... Spoon ... sweet Amy ... if the music industry has to wait for all the Baby Boomers to die before it's shows some life ... it will be waiting till hell freezes over ... Joey I want an autographed copy of that photo for Xmas ... to put next to my Harley ... CCM

Sir Stonesalot Bobby Bare Jr. is someone we should be paying some attention to. I saw him open for DBT and he peeled my ears back but good. He's an oddball. I had a chance to hang out with him after that show. I told him how much I enjoyed his set, and that I bought his CD...he wrapped me up in a big bear hug and kissed me on the forehead. He said, "Bless you. Now we might be able to eat tomorrow!" LOL! Think a combination of Tom Waits, The Pixies, and Merle Haggard except 'cept Bobby has a high voice.
