Topic: "UNCUT" Stones Collectors Edition - A MUST! Return to archive
12-06-01 03:31 PM
Gazza As mentioned earlier, the new issue of the UK music & movies magazine "UNCUT" (issue #56. Cover date : January 2002) is a collectors edition with heavy Stones content and is an essential purchase.

"UNCUT" have actually produced TWO separate covers for this issue (the contents of each magazine are otherwise identical) - one with a Gered Mankowitz band photo circa 1964 and a second with a photo from the "Sticky Fingers" photo sessions by Peter Webb.

Each issue comes with a different bonus CD of Stones covers - some of which were recorded especially for this project. Some of them obscure, some of them well known and the two Cd's feature a total of 33 songs by the likes of The Ramones,MC5, Marianne Faithfull,Kelly Jones (Stereophonics), The Blind Boys of Alabama,Johnny Winter and Ryan Adams - covers include not just the obvious mega hits but less obvious choices such as "child of the Moon","Empty Heart","Spider & the Fly","I Just Wanna see His Face" and er....the Silver Jews' rendition of "Cocksucker Blues" (surely the first cover of this 'gem' ?). Some of the versions are marvellous, some are damn weird - some you'll love, some you'll probably hate - but all of them are however great songs. Ive only heard one of the Cd's so far (the second one) and I love it - quirky in parts, but thats half the fun.

As for the reading contents - its a heartfelt and fondly put together labour of love to the greatest rock'n'roll band of them all on the eve of their 40th anniversary as a band. The bulk of the 40 plus pages devoted to the Stones consists of the results of a poll of various musicians, writers and assorted celebrities from both sides of the pond on the subject of the Stones' greatest songs with personalised comments on every song. Amongst the panel are the likes of Ryan Adams,Frank Black,Bob geldof,Chris Hillman, Al Kooper,Nils Lofgren,Phil manzanera, Dave Marsh, Andrew Loog Oldham,Steven Soderbergh and Joe Strummer. The comments alone make you want to dig the songs out and play them all night. The photos are great too.

Also briefly interviewed on their choices and providing their Top 10 are two guys named Michael Jagger and Ronald Wood. Theres also a lengthy analysis by Keith on the Top 10 songs chosen by the "panel" although Keith himself doesnt list his own Top 10 ("theyre ALL my babies..")

For the record,Mick's Top 10:
1. Gimme Shelter 2. Wild Horses 3. You Cant always get what you want 4. Sympathy For The Devil 5. Midnight Rambler 6. Honky Tonk Women 7. Out Of Control 8.Sway
9. Undercover Of the Night 10. Miss You
("Sway" at #8 yet theyve NEVER played it in concert??? ODD)

Woody's faves:
1. Sister Morphine 2. Sympathy For The Devil 3.Black Limousine 4. You Got The Silver 5. No Expectations 6. Miss You 7. Factory Girl 8. Out Of Control 9. 19th Nervous Breakdown 10. Far Away Eyes

Elsewhere in the magazine and Stones related are a competition to win all 39 available Stones albums on CD, an interesting feature on Kenneth Anger, the "truth" behind the Mars Bar fable and a 5-star review of Bill Wyman's new book "Bill wyman's Blues Odyssey".

All in all, a superb publication treating the Stones' music and legacy with the respect it deserves.
