Possibly the most surprising thing about Mick Jagger's solo career is that it still exists. His last effort, 1993's Wandering Spirit, failed to trouble the British or American Top 10, chiefly on account of it being dreadful. That should have been that. Jagger is 60 in 2003 and a comfortable dotage of the occasional Rolling Stones tour, a little cricket and the odd territory-marking faux scandal beckoned. It still beckons of course, but Goddess In The Doorway is the work of a man who is generally interested and occasionally inspired.
Jagger has written seven of these 12 tracks alone, three more with
Rolling Stones keyboardist Matt Clifford, another with Clifford and Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas and one with Lenny Kravitz. He even produces and plays guitar on all but one track. He has and this is rarely something that springs to mind with Mick Jagger worked hard for his money. Guests although no proper Stones abound. Pete Townshend, Bono, Wyclef Jean, Joe Perry and Kravitz on the rip-roaring standout God Gave Me Everything, where Jagger almost sounds convincingly self-reflective. Sure, there's filler tucked in on the final third, but Jagger emerges largely unscathed.
