Topic: 2004 was a VERY good year.... Return to archive Page: 1 2
December 6th, 2004 02:36 PM
Sir Stonesalot Last night was the last live show of the year for me. The Bennies, the Datsun's, and The Pixies at the Tweeter Center in lovely Camden NJ...quite possibly my least fave venue in the world. 2004 was a very good year for ol' SS and live music. In fact, I'll probably look back on this year as "The Year Of The Show".

I look back over the list of bands that I saw this year, and I'm amazed. There were only a very few bands that I didn't care for, and there wasn't a bad show in the bunch. The folks I met along the way were mostly really cool people. The only way it could have been better was if there were a bunch of Stones gigs tossed in as well.

Here's the tally:

David Bowie
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Bob Dylan(twice)
Willie Nelson
The Hot Club Of Cowtown
Prince
George Thorogood & The Destroyers

Little Stven's International Underground Garage Festival:
The Sexy Magazines
Davey Allan & The Arrows
The Chains
The Star Spangles
The Gore Gore Girls
The Swingin' Neckbreakers
Muck and The Mires
The Caesars
The High Dials
The Fondas
The Contrast
The Singles
The Fleshtones(w/ Dave Faulkner of the Hoodoo Gurus)
Jarvis Humby
The Blackouts
The Cocktail Slippers
Richard and the Young Lions
The Flaming Sideburns
The Boss Martians
The Charms
The Cynics
The Lyres
The Stems
The Woggles
The Chocolate Watchband
The Shazam
The Electric Prunes
The Creation
The Chesterfield Kings
The Mooney Suzuki
The Paybacks
The Pete Best Band(TERRIBLE)
The Forty-Fives
The D4
THe Romantics
Nancy Sinatra(Psychotronic!)
The Dictators
Big Star(w/ Alex Chilton!)
Bo Diddley
The Raveonettes
The Pretty Things
The New York Dolls
The Strokes
Iggy Pop and the Stooges

The Dirtbombs
The Greenhornes
The Starlight Desperation
Thee Minks
The Romantics
The Chesterfield Kings
The Star Spangles
Chuck Prophet
The Old 97s
Rev Horton Heat
The Detroit Cobras
Mr. Airplane Man
Dead Moon
The Radio Nationals
Cicaeda
The Fleshtones
The Things
Myricle Brah
Cobra Verde
The O-Matics
Ian McLagan & The Bump Band
The Bennies
The Datsun's
The Pixies

So what was the best show I saw? Well, it's not easy to pick just one show....every show I went to this year had something great to recommend it. But 2 in particular stick out for me. Bob Dylan & Willie Nelson, and The Little Steven Festival. Bob & Willie because I took my son along, and the Little Steven Festival because of the Dolls & The Stooges. The Dolls and Stooges were just SO great that I can forgive all the bullshit that went along with the festival.

I don't know what 2005 holds in store...I'm hoping for some Stones, but I'm not holding my breath on that one. One thing is for certain though, if 2005 is only HALF as good as 2004 was, SS will be a happy boy.

On my wish list for 2005:
The Cramps
The Pogues
The Hives
PJ Harvey
The Cynics

Sir Stonesalot >Why all the obscure shit?<

I guess that depends on your definition of obscure. The headliners I went to see weren't obscure to me.

gypsy Bob & Willie for me. Thanks, Martha, for talking me into going...I enjoyed every second of that night.
Hot Club of Cowtown rocked...that chick on the fiddle can really play...and she is gorgeous to boot. Lucky girl.
Willie's son, Lucas, is absolutely amazing!

Yes, TTM, I remember Stefano. God, he's ancient. Remember when Marlena was possessed by the devil? Stefano and that one chick--Celeste! That was hilarious.

Not really - A friend from Alaska asked me to go tape it for him, got in 2 or 3 songs late (line around the building, only letting a few people in), basically leaned up against the wall and half slept until he did Memo From Turner. That woke me up then it was all over. I really wish I had that few hours back!

Scot Rocks Interesting list SS, lotta good bands there and quite a few I havent heard.

Would liked to have seen more but this is mine from 2004...

Kings of Leon (Glasgow Carling Academy) - Brilliant

White Stripes (SECC) - Fantastic live

The Libertines(The Barrowlands) - Has to be up there as my favourite gig along with the Stones

Eastern Lane - Not bad

Razorlight - (The Barrowlands) Excellent, great response from crowd

Babyshambles (The Glasgow Garage) - next week again - Crazy, chaotic but great gig nonetheless

Pete Doherty Solo (Glasgow Barfly) - See above

Adam Green - (Glasgow Garage) Really good as well
Plus quite a few local bands

So many other bands I want to see though just too skint or didnt have the time to go

parmeda What a great idea to reflect, SS...

I can say that this year, I had a couple of firsts...

*The White Stripes/Flaming Lips on New Years Eve
(Made a good "bang" to kick the year off for me, lol)
*Dylan
(Missed half of the show due to the fact of having to spare a jack-ass from getting his ass kicked for trying to swipe the hubby's leather...yeah, THAT was fun!)
*Diana Ross
(Yep! The drunken little Nolte-Slot cleaned up her act and impressed the hell outta me...plus, it was "one of those times" again, when my mother had an extra ticket and begged me to go with her...I'm glad I did!)

I had lots of repeats this year too.

My favorite...would be a tie between
Prince (OMG, I want his fucking shoes!!!) ...and
Rod Stewart (*sighs*...I loved his show!)

My list of festivals...countless!

And it's funny...just this past weekend, my best friend and I got together. The subject came up about how she and I, from the age of 17 to 24, and how many times we would go almost every weekend to stand in line to buy concert tickets while our other prissy friends opted to go shopping at the malls...
I didn't need a new fucking outfit every week!
Who do you think had better luck at picking up guys?
...I rest my case.

My point is, I am so fortunate that I have seen so many performances. I am also grateful, that I still can.
