Topic: GNR tour in jeopardy (SSC) Return to archive
12-09-02 12:11 PM
Boomhauer Some a-hole at Gasx3 was talking all this shit about how great the band (GNR) is and how the Stones have been washed up the past twenty years.

Well, he should be very proud of the "next" Rolling Stones (didn't some critics say GNR was the next coming of the Stones? lol). Axl and the guys can't cut it anymore (actually, couldn't cut it for the past 10-11 years) and the tour looks like a pile of crap with flies clinging on to it.

From Billboard.com:

Remainder Of GNR Tour In Doubt

With several shows already canceled, the remainder of Guns 'N Roses' first tour since 1993 is thought to be in jeopardy. The first recent show to be scotched came Friday in Philadelphia, where fans became unruly when the Axl Rose-led band failed to perform.

Police were called to the First Union Center, officials said. Witnesses at the venue reported angry fans yelling and cursing, some throwing bottles and chairs, and ripping up plants, but an arena spokesperson denied the accounts. Several fights were reported. Police reported no major injuries at the event, which drew an estimated 14,000 fans.

The arena spokesperson said officials were called shortly after 11 p.m. Friday and were told one member of Guns 'N Roses was ill, and that the band would not be able to perform. It was not known which member was sick. Members of the audience, while unhappy, left "in an orderly fashion," the spokesperson said, adding that police were called only as a precaution.

Following Friday's cancellation, the group also scotched a show last night (Nov. 8) at the First Union Center in Wilkes Barre, Pa., and tonight's show at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C. Other shows that have been officially canceled are a Dec. 21 stop in Albuquerque, N.M., Dec. 22 in Phoenix, Dec. 30 in Sacramento, Calif., and a New Year's Eve show in San Jose. Refunds are being offered at point of purchase.

The band's next scheduled gig comes Wednesday at the Bi-Lo Center in Greenville, S.C., where a venue spokesperson was not optimistic when contacted about the show there.

"We have not been told officially the tour has been canceled or our date," the spokesperson told Billboard.com. "We do know local hotels have been canceled. Beyond that we don't know anything. We're going forward as if the show is going to play." The spokesperson said that while some kind of confirmation is expected later today, "we haven't gotten any further definite notification one way or another."

A representative for the band's management referred all inquiries regarding the tour to the band's label, Interscope Records. At deadline, West Coast-based representatives for the label and tour promoter Clear Channel were unavailable for comment.

The Chinese Democracy tour, named for the band's expected but as-yet-unreleased first album in nearly a decade, is expected to resume in January. So far, only a Jan. 3 date at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, Calif., has been confirmed.

The planned 34-date tour was due to kick off Nov. 7 in Vancouver, where police were forced to use pepper spray to disperse thousands of irate fans rampaging outside GM Place after the show was canceled because lead singer Axl Rose was stuck in Los Angeles. The tour officially got underway the following night in Tacoma, Wash.

jb The guy claims GR's show was better than 3 out of the 4 Stones shows he saw...What amazes me is the interest this tour has generated..they sold over 15,000 seat to cancelled tacoma dome and 14,000 to Philly show ...obviously still a lot of interest in this once good band.
12-09-02 12:43 PM
mikecooper the reason the tour is done is because of bad ticket sales. sure in some towns or cities they might sell well, but others?? no. I am a big sammy hagar fan and in st louis sammy will sell out riverport but in another city he wouldnt.

guns and who?? after 10 years with no new music and a whole different band trying to play arenas is a bold move, and it didnt work!
12-09-02 12:51 PM
KeepRigid You know, it might have something to do with the fact that...this isn't Guns n Roses.

I credit this latest string of cancellations to Axl being told that they didn't get a bigger dressing room than the puppets.

mikecooper there are very few groups that can stick around over time and the stones are one of the few. Axl and GnR are done end of story! Dont get me wrong I have seen them and they were great when they opened for the Cult and when the opened for Aerosmith and then when they were the headlining act and with Metallica but times have changed and yet still no record. here is the deal change the name or get back together!

Gimme Shelter I actually had tickets to them here in Sacramento at Arco Arena on Dec. 30th, but I just received an e-mail from Ticketmaster saying the remainder of the tour has been cancelled.

sammy davis jr. Guns N' Roses' career spanned what? 5 years? And now been dormant for 10 years? I'm very surprised there's any interest at all in the band, considering there's only one original member. And this freaking "great record" I've been reading about for about five years now that still hasn't come out. I'm sorry, but Axl is plainly completely nuts. This guy has clearly burned every bridge he ever had. I did read that Slash is making a record with the rest of the original band to be released sometime next year. Woopee, more masturbatory blues solos that never stop. I won't buy it either.

corgi37 sammy davis, you are on the same wavelength as me. I can only agree 100% with every thing you wrote. I was actually going to post a post tonight about "Gnr" and how the tour was going. I guess i am not surprised at the disaster its become. I hope that fuckwit gets sued for millions over it. And i cant believe that stupid fucking record is still not out. Maybe Axle can move in with michael jackson after all this has finished. I think its safe to say no promoter will touch him after this debacle. Thank God for that.

jb Corgi,Esq..please advise about Aussie ticket sales..Thank you Corgi...

KeepRigid This just gets funnier every day!

The following appears in today's issue of the New York Post. (I especially love the 'Manhattan hotel suite' rumour.)

I bet at this point, even Brian Wilson is chuckling to himself.

-----------------------------------------

Welcome to the bungle: Thanks to Axl Rose's bizarre behavior, GUNS N' ROSES had the plug pulled yesterday on the band's first tour in almost a decade.

Clear Channel, the promoter, halted the long-anticipated tour after the band canceled Friday's concert at Philadelphia's First Union Center because Rose never showed up.

The night before, Rose told fans at Madison Square Garden the tour was a reunion because, "I managed to get enough of myself together to do this."

The concert cop-out came less than a month after Rose skipped the tour opener in Vancouver, sparking riots between enraged fans and cops.

An announcement at the Philadelphia venue said the show was halted because of "health issues" of a band member. But G&R-watchers attributed the tour's failure to Rose's wacky eccentricities — which include traveling with a psychiatrist to coax him on-stage.

"He was still in New York during the Philly show," says an insider. "He never even got on the plane. The promoter put him on notice after what happened in Vancouver."

Another rumor had Rose holed up at his Manhattan hotel suite and telling his management that Thursday's sold-out show at the Garden was "as good as the band could get" and "it was time to cut their losses."

Whatever the reason behind the corn-rowed caterwauler's latest flake-out, it may spell the end of the current incarnation of G&R. While original members Slash, Duff McKagan, Izzy Stradlin, Gilby Clark and Steven Adler left years ago, Rose assembled an all-star line-up that includes guitar virtuoso Buckethead, former NINE INCH NAILS guitarist Robin Finck and ex-REPLACEMENTS bassist Tommy Stinson, to record a new album and tour.

"They were getting along better than ever because something was finally happening," said our source, referring to G&R's long-delayed "Chinese Democracy" album.

"But they had been previously frustrated by the delays and Axl's pathological perfectionism, tardiness and general insanity. Now they're back in the same boat, and they'll probably split."

Rose's chunky new build — which he disguises by wearing baggy football jerseys - and suspiciously smooth and unlined face have made him the butt of jokes among his bandmates, says an insider. Guitarist Finck even made a collage that pokes fun at Rose by including a face with five Botox needles sticking out of it.

Rose's spokeswoman at Interscope Records did not return calls.

Busch1 Maybe now Tommy Stinson will get back with Paul Westerberg and there will be a semi-Replacements reunion. One can only hope. ... I had tickets to the canceled second Philly show (freebees, as I'm sure a lot of people for that show had since it sold so poorly). I was looking forward to it, but what can you do. Axl must really be a nut. I remember all the comparisons to the Stones in the late 80s and early 90s, but there was no way GNR was ever going to stay around long. With the Stones, Mick and Keith are the big egos, and for the most part, everyone else kind of stays out of the way and lets them run things. With GNR, it seemed like everyone wanted to run everything, but they were all too screwed up to do anything. And, they had to deal with the biggest egomaniac to EVER pick up a mic.
12-10-02 01:59 PM
Boomhauer I wouldn't doubt if these guys didn't even rehearse much for this tour.

What I don't get is that just because of the name GNR they headlined some of the best arenas in the United States. It just baffles me.

With that said, I still enjoy some of their early stuff, like AFD, but there is pretty much a line to be drawn after that.

It was just like a fart..............they made some noise, they stunk it up, and they went away.

jb, you got one of them Plasma TV's? Shiiiiiiiiiit, the ones that are 3 inches deep and you can hang them on the wall. Hook up a Playstation 2 to it and play some college football and Grand Theft Auto on that motherfucker!!!
Not to mention the superb audio, picture quality, and durability of it.

12-10-02 02:33 PM
jb Boomhauer, I bought a 32 inch plasma T.V. from SoundAdvice...it truly is amazing....I would wait a year or so, as already the prices are coming down....I paid over 12k for mine, and i saw some advertised at Sears of all places for around 6k....
As far as the kiddie games, I do not let the kids touch that T.V.....they each have their playstation/ninetendo crap in their rooms....
