moy DECEMBER 2004

Throngs of fans packed London's Leiscester Square in a bid to catch a bit of the glitter and glam at the world premiere of The Phantom Of The Opera on Monday. Leading the way was actress Minnie Driver, stunning in a black lacy affair by Dolce & Gabbana. Minnie plays the Italian diva Carlotta in the long-awaited film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical.

"It was great fun to play. I based the role on Maria Callas," said the 34-year-old actress, adding, "I was so knackered by carrying around a 50lb dress and 30lb wig during filming that I just collapsed in bed every night."

Her co-stars Jennifer Ellison and Emmy Rossum, and Scotsman Gerard Butler, who plays the Phantom, were all smiles making their red carpet entrance. Jennifer looked particularly dazzling in a shimmering white gown with plunging neckline and embroidered with thousands of Swarovski crystals. The 21-year-old former Brooksideactress makes her big screen debut in the film.

They were joined by a roll call of stars for the gala event including Dame Shirley Bassey, Cilla Black, and Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood.

The movie musical directed by Hollywood heavyweight Joel Schumacher is touted to be one of the big box office hits this holiday season. The film goes on wide release in the UK December 10.
